What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer: Books That Build Skills Brand Logo Redesign position at Books That Build Skills powered by Athenian?
This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections.
We are looking for a skilled graphic designer to help us elevate our current Books That Build Skills logo into a polished, professional, standalone brand mark that clearly communicates who we are and what we do. When our nonprofit transitioned into version 2.0, we launched under the DBA name Books That Build Skills (powered by Athenian) and created a simple font-based logo to quickly establish the brand. While it has served us well as a starting point, we are now ready to take the branding to the next level. We want to create a logo that feels strong, memorable, and instantly recognizable while aligning with our existing visual identity across our website, social media, books, and podcast channels. The ideal logo should visually communicate the heart of our work: literacy, life skills, career exploration, STEM education, and preparing students for the future. The deliverables we hope to receive include: A primary standalone logo Secondary/submark logo variations Options for horizontal and stacked layouts Color and black-and-white versions Files optimized for web, print, podcast, and social media use We want the final logo to feel modern, educational, inspiring, and mission-driven while remaining approachable for both students and parents.
A strong logo is more than a visual asset—it is often the first impression families, educators, donors, sponsors, and community partners have of our organization. As we continue expanding nationally, a stronger logo will help improve brand recognition, increase credibility, and create stronger alignment across all of our platforms and programs. It will support our outreach efforts by helping people quickly understand our mission and connect with our work. This project directly supports our growth by strengthening the visual identity behind our books, educational resources, library partnerships, podcast content, sponsorship outreach, and fundraising efforts. A more polished and strategic logo will help us better communicate our value, attract new supporters, and create stronger awareness for the programs we are building to serve students nationwide. Books That Build Skills powered by Athenian is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on helping students, specifically girls ages 10–15, explore careers, build life skills, and gain confidence through STEM education. Our mission is to equip the next generation with communication, critical thinking, and career readiness skills they need to succeed.
