What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Capital Formation position at Boardman Bay Capital Management?
Boardman Bay
New York, NY (Manhattan Preferred) | East Coast Preferred
Founded in 2012, Boardman Bay is a technology-focused investment firm investing across public and private markets. Our work is centered on the foundational layers of modern computing and national competitiveness, including semiconductors, optical technologies, photonics, AI infrastructure, high-speed interconnects, and defense technologies.
Since 2018, we have developed a differentiated Optical Opportunities strategy built around the connective and enabling layers of next-generation technology infrastructure. What began as an optical-focused product has evolved into a distinctive Optical / AI Infrastructure strategy tied to some of the most important long-term shifts in compute, networking, and data center architecture.
Alongside our public-market platform, we have also built a leading venture investment portfolio that includes successful exits and investments in category-defining companies across AI infrastructure, semiconductors, robotics / Physical AI, defense tech, and advanced optical systems. Our private investing platform includes companies such as Ayar Labs, Groq, Syntiant, xLight, xMEMS, and LUUM, reflecting a long-standing thematic edge across hard technology, AI infrastructure, optical systems, and emerging defense-related technologies.
We are seeking a Director of Capital Formation to help scale Boardman Bay’s fundraising, investor development, and external market presence. This is a senior business-building role for someone who can help originate and convert new investor relationships, deepen existing partnerships, sharpen our market positioning, and help build an increasingly institutional capital formation engine across the firm.
The role reports directly to the CIO and Founder and will work closely with leadership across the platform.
This is an opportunity to help tell a genuinely differentiated story in the market: a firm spanning public and private investing, a distinctive Optical / AI Infrastructure product built since 2018, and a venture portfolio positioned around some of the most important themes in semiconductors, AI infrastructure, robotics, Physical AI, and defense technology.
- Partner with the CIO and Founder on the firm’s capital formation strategy and commercial priorities
- Help drive fundraising across the firm’s flagship strategies, Opportunity Fund products, Private Opportunities Fund, and select direct / SPV offerings
- Build, cultivate, and convert a pipeline of prospective investors, referral relationships, and strategic intermediaries
- Deepen relationships with existing investors through high-quality communication, disciplined follow-up, and thoughtful account coverage
- Help expand Boardman Bay’s investor base toward a more institutional profile, including sophisticated family offices, RIAs, endowments, foundations, consultants / OCIOs, and other institutional allocators
- Own key elements of investor-facing communication, including presentations, one-pagers, follow-up materials, meeting prep, DDQ support, talking points, conference materials, and targeted outbound content
- Help articulate Boardman Bay’s differentiated investment edge across semiconductors, optical / AI infrastructure, high-speed connectivity, private hard tech, and defense technology
- Coordinate investor meetings, roadshows, conferences, annual meetings, and ongoing outreach efforts
- Maintain strong CRM discipline, pipeline tracking, reporting cadence, and overall fundraising process hygiene
- Work with internal stakeholders to continue institutionalizing the firm’s investor experience, including onboarding workflows, data room organization, and investor portal content
- Meaningful experience in capital formation, investor relations, fundraising, business development, placement, or client solutions within a respected hedge fund, venture capital firm, growth equity firm, private equity platform, family office, or adjacent alternative asset manager
- A demonstrated ability to help raise capital and win trust with sophisticated investors
- Strong judgment on how a best-in-class capital formation function should actually operate inside a legitimate institutional-quality investment organization
- Excellent communication skills across writing, presentations, and live investor interaction
- Comfort translating complex investment themes into clear, compelling investor language
- Strong organizational ability, follow-through, and attention to detail
- High integrity, discretion, responsiveness, and professionalism
- A genuine desire to help build, not just maintain
- East Coast-based, with New York / Manhattan strongly preferred
- Willingness to travel as needed for investor meetings, events, and conferences
Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience. In addition to salary and incentive compensation, participation in carry and broader partnership-level economics may be considered for the right person.
