Job Summary

The Sustainability Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing environmentally responsible cleaning and facility maintenance practices across all client sites. This role ensures compliance with green cleaning standards, local sustainability regulations, and client-specific sustainability commitments, while driving cost-effective, low-impact operations across the company's portfolio of buildings.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the company's green cleaning program, including selection of third party eco-certified products (Green Seal, EcoLogo, EPA’s Safer Choice) and low-impact equipment (CRI)
• Manage the company’s recertification efforts for CIMS-GB (Cleaning Industry Management Standard – Green Building with honors) and Green Seal 42
• Train and audit janitorial crews on sustainable cleaning protocols, proper chemical handling, and waste diversion practices (recycling, composting, e-waste)
• Track and report on sustainability metrics (water, chemical and packaging usage reduction, chemical consumption, energy-efficient equipment use) for internal review and client reporting
• Interface with Vornado Sustainability team on annual progress towards procurement targets and broader organizational sustainability initiatives
• Partner with procurement to source sustainable supplies, equipment, and vendors
• Support clients pursuing LEED, WELL, Fitwel or other green building certifications by supplying required documentation and cleaning protocols
• Conduct site audits and walkthroughs to identify opportunities for waste reduction, water conservation, and energy efficiency
• Develop training materials and lead onboarding sessions on sustainability standards for new and existing staff
• Serve as the primary point of contact for client questions related to environmental practices and green cleaning certifications
• Prepare sustainability reports and presentations for leadership and client stakeholders
• Support other initiatives as needed

Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Facilities Management, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
• 3 years of experience in sustainability, facilities management, or environmental compliance, ideally within janitorial, property management, or building services
• Working knowledge of green cleaning standards and certifications (Green Seal, CIMS-GB)
• Strong communication skills with the ability to train frontline staff and present to clients and leadership
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; comfort with data tracking and reporting tools

Preferred:

• LEED Green Associate or LEED AP credential
• Experience working with commercial real estate or property management clients in NYC
• Familiarity with OSHA and NYC DOHMH regulations related to cleaning chemicals and waste handling
• Bilingual is a plus, given diverse frontline workforce
• 3 years of experience in sustainability, facilities management, or environmental compliance, ideally within janitorial, property management, or building services
• Working knowledge of green cleaning standards and certifications (Green Seal, CIMS-GB)
• Strong communication skills with the ability to train frontline staff and present to clients and leadership

Pay: $75,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
