Duties And Responsibilities
- Conduct inbound inspections of scrap metal to ensure materials meet quality, safety, and specification standards.
- Perform outbound quality verification to ensure loads meet consumer specifications before shipment.
- Identify contamination and quality risks; recommend remedial procedures to correct deficiencies and prevent reoccurrence.
- Utilize XRF devices, visual inspection techniques, and material identification methods to validate grade and composition.
- Ensure Remis entries are accurate, complete, and timely to support quality tracking and revenue protection.
- Assist suppliers by directing them to the correct commodity pile or quality‑appropriate unloading location.
- Support safe and efficient yard flow by giving clear instructions, guiding traffic, and communicating hazards.
- Share inspection findings with operations and settlement teams to support corrective actions, deduction decisions, and process improvements.
- Participate in collaborative efforts focused on elevating material quality, reducing contamination, and improving inspection consistency.
- Contribute to quality improvements within inspection systems, documentation clarity, and process flow.
- Model consistent application of BlueScope’s quality standards and reinforce the importance of inspection accuracy.
- Follow all BlueScope Recycling Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) rules and policies without exception.
- Maintain housekeeping expectations in assigned areas to support safe, effective inspection work.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 1 year of experience working with ferrous and non‑ferrous materials or demonstrated aptitude to learn material identification principles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient basic math, reading, and writing skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work effectively.
- Demonstrated technological aptitude.
- Exposure to or training with:
- XRF devices for material identification.
- Remis – Scrap Metal ERP system.
- Scrap metal commodities and basic market conditions.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, generally 8–12 hours per shift.
- Performs frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and reaching during material inspections.
- Must be capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Requires visual ability to inspect materials for quality, contaminants, and safety hazards, including distinguishing between colors and material types.
- Works in outdoor environments in a range of weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Works in proximity to heavy machinery and high‑noise environments while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Must be able to wear required PPE for extended periods.
