Position Summary:

Implements provided lesson plans for the absent employee in addition to other assigned job duties.

  • The job of Substitute Teacher, Paraprofessional, or Teacher Aide reports to the Building Principal.
  • This is an "as needed" position.
  • Substitute Teacher Pay is: $132 per day; After 10 consecutive days on the same job the pay will retroactively be $148/day.

Substitute Teacher Essential Functions:

  • Assumes the responsibilities for instructing classes when a teacher is absent.
  • Assumes all other responsibilities for that teacher during the time the teacher is absent.
  • Prepares lesson plans with assistance, as directed by an administrator, when lesson plans are not available in the classroom.
  • Maintains appropriate records including checking test papers, recording grades, student assignments for homework, projects and the necessary clerical work required to maintain student records for a teacher who is absent.
  • Provides for individualized and small group assistance for students as indicated by lesson plans.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Substitute Paraprofessional or Teacher Aide Essential Functions:

  • Aids the immediate administration of first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs for students.
  • Assists with implementing student's daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g., class schedule, medication, appetite, transfer arrangement, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a supportive learning environment.
  • Attends to and guides classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher (e.g., math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing instructional objectives.
  • Communicate with various personnel (e.g., supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, bus drivers, nurses, therapists, parents, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in data collection, evaluating progress, and/or implementing educational objectives.
  • Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records; performs clerical duties (e.g., supplies, copying, set-up classroom before/after, hand out/collect papers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing written reference, and/or meeting mandated requirements.
  • Monitors students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments, accommodations and/or modifications (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, facilitate activities, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching instructional goals and grade level standards.
  • Participates in training, meetings, and in-service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, classroom management, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information related to job functions.
  • Reports incidents relating to specific students (e.g., health concerns, accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel and ensuring the safety of students.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies and the educational goals.
  • Watches over students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise students.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee will occasionally sit and walk and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must occasionally push and/or move up to 50 pounds such as a TV/VCR cart. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee continuously interacts with the public and other staff and occasionally meets multiple demands from several people.

Experience: Job-related experience is desired.
Education: Associate degree or bachelor’s degree (preferred) or a minimum of 36 college credit hours.
Certificates: Current Missouri Teaching Certificate or current Missouri Substitute Teacher Certificate required.
Equivalency: 20-Hour Substitute Teacher Certification Training.
