Position Summary
The Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing transportation, logistics, routing, carrier management, fleet activity, and regulatory compliance. This role supports the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of finished goods and raw materials while maintaining strong standards for food safety, customer service, operational performance, and compliance.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on transportation and logistics experience, strong leadership skills, and the ability to manage daily routing, drivers, carriers, freight costs, and cross-functional communication in a fast-paced manufacturing or warehouse environment.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation Operations & Fleet Management
- Oversee daily routing, scheduling, and dispatch for Class A drivers and third-party carriers.
- Manage yard flow, trailer staging, inbound logistics, outbound shipments, and freezer-related logistics.
- Ensure customer orders are delivered accurately, on time, and in full.
- Coordinate warehouse logistics, catalog goods, plan delivery routes, and process shipments.
- Monitor transportation issues, delays, reroutes, and schedule changes as needed.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Promote a safety-first culture with the goal of zero injuries and an incident rate below 0.5%.
- Maintain required documentation and certifications related to DOT, FDA, HACCP, OSHA, EPA, GMP, Organic, and SQF standards.
- Support food safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Ensure transportation and logistics practices align with company safety and regulatory requirements.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, coach, and develop Class A drivers, transportation coordinators, and yard staff.
- Build a culture focused on safety, accountability, service, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct training, performance reviews, team meetings, and cross-functional alignment discussions.
- Communicate expectations clearly and ensure team members are meeting operational standards.
Freight & Carrier Management
- Source, evaluate, and negotiate competitive freight rates across lanes and sales channels.
- Develop and maintain relationships with third-party carriers.
- Review carrier performance, service levels, and agreements.
- Partner with internal departments to ensure delivery timelines are met at the best possible cost.
- Support freight initiatives and broader supply chain improvement efforts.
Financial & KPI Management
- Track transportation expenses, freight costs, fleet utilization, delivery efficiency, and cost per unit.
- Report on key performance indicators, including on-time delivery, order fulfillment, fleet productivity, and transportation costs.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement process improvements.
- Support year-over-year improvements in transportation performance and spend.
Communication & Coordination
- Maintain consistent communication with production, quality, warehouse, customer service, and logistics teams.
- Alert management to delays, shortages, shipping errors, safety concerns, or service issues.
- Provide shift reports, status updates, and transportation performance summaries.
- Review and report shipping errors and recommend corrective actions.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred in Logistics, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field.
- 3 years of experience in transportation, logistics, supply chain, or warehouse operations.
- 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
- Experience in food, beverage, cold-chain, or manufacturing logistics preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of transportation, logistics systems, freight management, and end-to-end supply chain operations.
- ERP/WMS experience required; NetSuite and RFSmart experience preferred.
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Forklift and pallet jack certification required.
- Bilingual Spanish/English skills are a plus.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to walk the production floor or warehouse for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing, warehouse, cold-chain, or logistics environment.
- Ability to work in areas with noise, equipment, and required PPE.
- Ability to occasionally lift materials up to 20 lbs.
Pay: $72,035.58 - $80,000.00 per year
