What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dean of Manufacturing & Engineering Technologies position at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College?
The primary role of the Dean of Manufacturing & Engineering Technologies is the development of relevant, quality curriculum, teaching, learning, and assessment in the Manufacturing & Engineering Technology program areas. The Dean provides supervision, guidance, and support to department faculty. The Dean is responsible for academic excellence and student success, encouraging lifelong learning by working collaboratively with college stakeholders to support the mission of the College.
The primary location is the Technology Center campus in Berkeley County, this position will also have duties at the Pines Opportunity Center in Morgan County.
- Hiring, training, mentoring, and supervision of faculty, including job postings, leave requests, performance appraisals, and committee assignment.
- Promotes professional development and relevant industry certification for faculty within the Department.
- Oversees the development of the course schedule to include hybrid and Hyflex modalities, adjunct lists, and course fees.
- Facilitates monthly staff meetings for faculty in the Department.
- Supports the VP of Workforce Development & Engineering Technologies with annual budget development and monthly budget reviews.
- Provides program support for teaching and learning innovation and technology and demonstrates new, emerging instructional technologies.
- Actively engages in the development of flexible pathways including short-term training courses, certification programs, apprenticeships, continuing education/career advancement and workforce training related to all manufacturing sectors, including utilities and energy.
- Participates in Assessment activities. Monitors and develops assessment plans, provides faculty with course evaluation feedback, and ensures a relevant curriculum developed to promote student success in a competitive labor market.
- Assist the Vice President in the development and reporting of grants, including program reviews and post audit reviews.
- Develops state grants for specific training needs in support of local employers.
- Prepares grant monitoring reports and ensures deliverables are met within the scope of the grant projects.
- Collaborates with teams to develop and manage federal grants specific to manufacturing training projects.
- Collaborates with BRCTC personnel for implementing the mission and strategic plan for the institution.
- Oversees all curricular activities for the Manufacturing & Engineering Programs, including high school programs.
- Recruits new students and successfully retains students in all Manufacturing Engineering Programs.
- Provides academic advisement to students through one-on-one mentoring, workshops, or presentations.
- Ensures industry safety and program requirements are current and procedures are followed for all students and staff.
- Teaches a load commensurate with administrative assignment, which is primarily customized training.
- Performs any other duties to drive the College’s Vision, to fulfill the College’s Mission, and to abide by the College’s Values.
Education
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution required.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Degree, certificates, or industrial certification in Engineering and Manufacturing to include Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing.
- Equivalent combination of education and occupational experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities have been acquired.
Experience
- Prior teaching experience required, preferably in post-secondary education.
- Occupational experience outside the field of education preferred.
- If teaching experience requirement is not met, a combination of teaching and other related experience such as direct industry experience, project management, training & development, program coordination, and/or curriculum writing and oversight may be considered.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience, preferably in a post-secondary institution, that is aligned with the requirements of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact with all levels of internal and external customers.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based, innovative, and continuous quality improvement focused environment; experience leading cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and project management experience with the ability to multitask.
- Demonstrated ability to use software applications, including Microsoft Office applications, systems such as Banner, email, Learning Management Systems (LMS), data management systems such as Power BI and instructional delivery technology to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of teaching and learning.
- Any combination of industrial certifications related to manufacturing
- Proficiency in Microsoft Officeproducts (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Experience with Banner, BlackBoard, BlackBoard Analytics, Degree Works, or other similar higher education software preferred
- Clear and considerate communications in alignment with the College’s Core Values.
Licensure/Certification Required
- Valid driver’s license required.
