Controller

Position Summary

Blue Ribbon Meats & Seafood is seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to lead the company's accounting and financial operations. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of financial reporting, overseeing daily accounting functions, managing cash flow, supporting strategic decision-making, and ensuring compliance with all financial, tax, and regulatory requirements.

As a key member of the leadership team, the Controller will partner closely with ownership and department leaders to drive operational efficiency, profitability, and long-term growth while preserving the values and service standards that have defined Blue Ribbon for more than 75 years.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Maintain accurate general ledger and accounting records.
• Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes.
• Develop and monitor key financial performance metrics.
• Provide timely financial reporting and recommendations to ownership and senior management.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.

Accounting Operations

• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory accounting functions.
• Ensure accurate inventory valuation and cost accounting for meat, seafood, and value-added products.
• Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital requirements.
• Monitor banking relationships and treasury activities.
• Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures.

Compliance & Risk Management

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
• Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
• Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, and insurance providers.
• Maintain compliance with all reporting requirements and business licenses.

Leadership & Process Improvement

• Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and administrative staff.
• Evaluate and improve financial systems, reporting tools, and business processes.
• Support operational leaders with profitability analysis, pricing reviews, and cost-control initiatives.
• Participate in strategic planning and business growth initiatives.
• Assist ownership with special projects, acquisitions, capital investments, and financial analysis.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
• Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, and internal controls.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced operational environment.

Preferred

• CPA designation.
• Experience in food distribution, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, or related industries.
• Experience with inventory-intensive businesses and cost accounting.
• ERP system implementation or management experience.
• Family-owned business experience.
