What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Analyst position at Blue Marble?
Financial Analyst
Ashland, Oregon | In office four days per week, remote one
The Mission
At Blue Marble, good financial reporting isn't about moving numbers from one system to another. It's about understanding what the numbers are telling us - and knowing when they don't make sense.
We're looking for a Financial Analyst who loves getting into the details, finding the thing that doesn't quite tie, and turning raw accounting data into information people can trust and use.
A lot of this role lives in Excel, but the value you bring isn't simply knowing formulas. It's knowing when the output looks wrong, asking the next question, and staying with it until the answer makes sense.
If you're the person who notices the broken formula everyone else missed, questions the unexplained variance, and actually wants to understand why it happened, you'll probably love this role.
What You'll Do
• Keep Reporting Running. Maintain and deliver recurring Excel-based management reports using data from our accounting system and other business sources.
• Protect the Numbers. Validate source data, catch irregularities, and make sure financial statements, schedules, formulas, and model logic tie together.
• Chase Down the Why. Follow up with Accounting, Finance, and department leaders when information is incomplete, unusual, or simply does not make sense.
• Support the Forecast. Review forecast submissions and assist with updates to recurring and longer-term financial models.
• Build Better Reporting. Develop new Excel reports from defined requirements and improve existing reporting where there is a smarter way to do it.
• Dig Into the Business. Perform recurring and ad-hoc analysis, identify meaningful movements, and help explain what is changing behind the numbers.
What You Bring
• A Detail-Oriented Mindset. You naturally check your work, notice inconsistencies, and care whether every number lands where it should.
• Strong Excel Skills. You are comfortable working in established financial workbooks, tracing formulas, fixing errors, and understanding how calculations connect.
• Financial Instinct. You understand what the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement should look like and recognize when something is off.
• Follow-Through. You do not just flag a problem and move on. You ask the next question and stay with it until the issue is resolved.
• Curiosity. You want to understand what changed, why it changed, and whether the answer makes sense.
• Clear Communication. You are comfortable reaching out to colleagues and leaders to clarify information, resolve discrepancies, and keep work moving.
What It Takes
• Generally 3 years of relevant experience in Finance, Accounting, Business Analytics, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of practical experience working with accounting or ERP systems.
• Experience compiling, reconciling, or reviewing accounting and financial data.
• Experience working with financial statements, management reporting, or forecasting.
• Strong Excel capability, including formulas and functions, lookups, SUMIFS or similar conditional formulas, pivot tables, nested formulas, and tracing formula or link errors.
• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field. We are flexible on the specific degree where relevant experience demonstrates the capability required.
What Sets You Apart
Experience with enterprise accounting systems, forecast-versus-actual reporting, financial KPIs, longer-term forecasting models, Power Query, Power BI, or reporting automation will stand out. Exposure to journal entries, general-ledger activity, or AR/AP schedules is also useful.
You do not need to arrive as a senior FP&A expert. We are looking for someone who already has a strong foundation and wants to keep building deeper analytical, modeling, and reporting capability.
How We'll Measure Success
Your reporting is accurate and on time. You catch issues before they reach management. Models keep working the way they should. Questions get resolved instead of lingering. And over time, you move beyond compiling the numbers to helping explain what they mean.
Is Blue Marble Right for You?
We're intentionally building a culture of people who lead by example, challenge one another respectfully, take ownership of their work, and want to continue learning and improving.
Blue Marble may be exactly the place you're looking for if...
• You take ownership of your words, actions, and work product.
• You value honest, hard conversations and long-term progress over short-term comfort.
• You enjoy solving meaningful problems and seek purposeful work.
• You see feedback as an opportunity to improve and grow.
• You naturally look for ways to make things better and help others succeed.
• You ask questions when something isn't clear.
• You believe character matters as much as competence.
• You proactively bring solutions to problems.
On the other hand, you probably won't enjoy working here if...
• You spend more time making excuses or pointing fingers than solving problems.
• You consistently avoid difficult conversations.
• You believe your responsibility ends with your job description.
• You need someone to constantly tell you what to do.
• You become defensive when receiving constructive feedback.
• You believe being right is more important than finding the best solution.
• You consistently wait for instructions rather than taking appropriate initiative.
• You have difficulty acknowledging mistakes and learning from them.
• You're primarily looking for a paycheck rather than an opportunity to meaningfully contribute.
We're not looking for perfect people.
We're looking for capable people who want to keep getting better and who bring their best to the people and work around them.
If this sounds like you, let's make great things together.
