POSITION SUMMARY

The Custodian is a member of the Maintenance and Facilities team responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining district facilities to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the community. This position may support multiple district facilities as needed and requires a high level of responsibility, attention to detail, and pride in maintaining district buildings. This position works 6:00 am–2:30 pm (includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch). This position is supervised by and reports to the Director of Maintenance and Facilities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in custodial work or a related field
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work
  • Ability to distinguish between clean, sanitized, and disinfected conditions
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining clean and safe environments
  • Ability to follow directions, carry out instructions, and complete assigned tasks independently
  • Ability to plan, organize, and complete assigned tasks independently
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong work ethic and reliability, with a consistent record of attendance
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and supervisors
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and follow basic procedures
  • Ability to perform physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to practice and follow proper safety standards

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean and sanitize assigned areas using approved methods and materials in accordance with district standards
  • Perform daily cleaning tasks, including but not limited to restrooms, classrooms, offices, kitchens, locker rooms, gyms, and common areas
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of facilities through sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting, and waste removal
  • Operate, clean, and maintain custodial equipment and tools in safe working condition
  • Maintain adequate inventory of custodial supplies and notify supervisor of needs
  • Maintain exterior areas near building entrances, including litter removal and general upkeep
  • Remove graffiti from district property in a timely manner
  • Monitor building conditions and respond to cleaning or maintenance needs as they arise
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks and report larger issues to maintenance staff
  • Follow proper procedures for use of cleaning chemicals and disinfectants
  • Maintain building security by ensuring doors and windows are secured and lights are off at the end of shift
  • Support setup and cleanup for events and activities, including moving equipment and furniture
  • Check and respond to email or communication systems as required
  • Assist other custodial, maintenance, and facilities team members as needed
  • Identify and report safety hazards and take appropriate action to prevent accidents
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and repetitive motion
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and equipment noise
  • Work performed indoors and occasionally outdoors

 

Salary Range: 2025-26 is $26.15 – $32.48 per hour, depending on school district or equivalent professional experience and in accordance with the SEIU negotiated contract.  The salary for the 2026-27 school year will be adjusted by IPD when available.

 

BENEFITS: Benefits include Sick Leave, Vacation Leave, Family Sick Leave, Bereavement Leave, Medical, Dental, Vision, AD&D, and Basic Life insurance coverages. Retirement is through the WA State Department of Retirement, plans available: SERS Plan 2 or SERS Plan 3.
