Assistant Teacher / Assistant Group Supervisor – Preschool Classroom (Ages 4–5)

Job Title: Assistant Teacher / Assistant Group Supervisor
Department: Early Learning Center (ELC)
Reports To: Child Care Director and Lead Teacher / Group Supervisor
Location: Bloomsburg Area YMCA Early Learning Center
Status: Full-Time

Position Summary

The Assistant Teacher/Assistant Group Supervisor supports the Lead Teacher in providing a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for preschool children ages 2–5. This position assists with implementing curriculum, supervising children, maintaining licensing and Keystone STARS standards, communicating with families, and ensuring the overall success of the classroom.

The Assistant Group Supervisor also serves as a classroom leader in the absence of the Lead Teacher and works collaboratively with all Early Learning Center staff to promote high-quality early childhood education.

Essential Responsibilities

Classroom Instruction

  • Assist in implementing developmentally appropriate lesson plans using Creative Curriculum.
  • Support children's cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language development through engaging learning experiences.
  • Participate in daily activities including circle time, centers, outdoor play, small group instruction, and transitions.
  • Encourage children's independence, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
  • Maintain a positive, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment.

Child Supervision & Safety

  • Maintain active supervision of children at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) regulations and YMCA policies.
  • Maintain required staff-to-child ratios.
  • Conduct regular head counts during classroom activities, outdoor play, field trips, and transitions.
  • Model appropriate behavior and use positive guidance techniques.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow all safety procedures.

Classroom Management

  • Assist in preparing and maintaining an organized, clean, and engaging classroom.
  • Help sanitize toys, equipment, and learning materials throughout the day.
  • Assist children with toileting, handwashing, meals, and other daily routines.
  • Help prepare classroom materials and learning centers.
  • Maintain classroom documentation and required records.

Family Communication

  • Greet families warmly during arrival and dismissal.
  • Maintain professional and respectful communication with parents.
  • Share appropriate information regarding children's daily activities and accomplishments.
  • Support family engagement activities and classroom events.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Assume classroom leadership in the absence of the Lead Teacher.
  • Assist with mentoring new classroom staff and substitutes.
  • Support consistent classroom routines and expectations.
  • Help ensure curriculum implementation and classroom quality.
  • Collaborate with other teaching staff to provide continuity of care.

Documentation

  • Complete daily attendance and required classroom documentation.
  • Record observations to support child assessments.
  • Assist with developmental screenings and assessment documentation.
  • Post daily updates and photos for families through Brightwheel as directed.

Team Collaboration

  • Work cooperatively with all YMCA staff.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Support special events, family nights, and program activities.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by assisting other classrooms when needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field or qualifications meeting Pennsylvania DHS requirements for an Assistant Group Supervisor.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with young children preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, and staff.
  • Current Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Successful completion of all required background clearances.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit on the floor and interact with children throughout the day.
  • Bend, kneel, squat, and stand for extended periods.
  • Participate in outdoor activities in various weather conditions.
  • Respond quickly to children's needs and emergencies.

Work Schedule

This position is typically scheduled Monday through Friday. Hours may vary based on program needs. Occasional evening meetings, trainings, or family events may be required.
