The Blinn College District is searching for a Student Worker - Residence Hall-Front Desk Assistant at our Brenham Campus.

Job Summary

The Front Desk Assistant is a student position within the Department of Housing and Residence Life. Front Desk Assistants are responsible for providing professional front desk, administrative, and customer service support within the residence halls.
Front Desk Assistants assist the Residence Hall Director and/or Assistant Residence Hall Director with the effective administration and daily operation of the residence hall. This includes staffing the front desk, assisting residents and guests, monitoring building access, responding appropriately to questions and concerns, and completing related administrative tasks.
Front Desk Assistants are expected to maintain a professional, mature, and responsible demeanor at all times. They must exercise sound judgment, demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills, maintain confidentiality, and consistently follow and support Blinn College and Housing and Residence Life policies and procedures.
Front Desk Assistants are scheduled to provide coverage during designated front desk hours, with shifts scheduled between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM. Employees are expected to report to all assigned shifts on time and remain attentive and engaged throughout their scheduled work hours.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Front Desk Assistants are responsible for confirming that students live in the residence hall by checking student IDs and signing in all guests. They monitor the building entrance to ensure that only authorized residents and approved guests enter the student living areas.
  • Front Desk Assistants help maintain a safe and welcoming residence hall environment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through scheduled desk coverage. Assistants must be punctual and report to all assigned shifts on time. Front Desk Assistant shifts are scheduled between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM, and employees must have availability to work during these hours.
  • Check in all guests at the front desk. Verify residents and provide keys only for their assigned room when completing lockouts. Update FOB access as needed. Know emergency procedures and when it is appropriate to contact the RA on duty, Residence Hall Director, and/or Campus Police. Follow all fire alarm system and emergency evacuation procedures appropriately.
  • Assist with all residence hall opening and closing responsibilities and assist with check-in and checkout procedures throughout the year. This includes reviewing room inventory forms, Personal Data Sheets, and other paperwork as residents check in and check out.
  • Troubleshoot problems that occur with front desk operations. Maintain a clean and organized front desk and lobby area. Complete paperwork and administrative assignments in a timely manner, including but not limited to equipment checkouts and room inventory forms.
  • Read and maintain the desk log, which is used to sign in and out of the desk, inventory lockout and equipment keys, and track other equipment and desk supplies.
  • Respond to emergency exit door alarms, monitor security cameras, and greet students and guests entering the building.
  • Confront policy violations that occur in the desk area and complete incident reports accurately and in a timely manner, immediately when possible. Report maintenance and custodial issues online or to the Residence Hall Director on call and show residents how to submit maintenance and custodial work requests online. Assist residents with lockout keys and other key-related issues.
  • Serve as an information source to residents and parents regarding college and community services. Respect and maintain student and staff confidentiality, except in situations that may pose a danger to individuals or the greater community. Maintain a positive and open attitude when interacting with staff members, supervisors, Campus Police, residents, and visitors.
  • Front Desk Assistants should model strong leadership characteristics, including responsibility, a positive attitude, fairness, enthusiasm, flexibility, commitment, integrity, good time management, communication skills, and a willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications / Required Degree, License or Certifications


  • Must be Federal Work-Study eligible.
  • Must be a full-time student at Blinn College, including students enrolled at any Blinn campus or through online courses.
  • Must be able to work 10–19 hours per week.
  • Must be available to work scheduled shifts between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM.
  • Must be available to work assigned residence hall opening and closing periods.


Minimum Competencies

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of copier/scanner use and operation.
  • Must be a student in good standing and maintain a minimum 2.00 GPA throughout the term of employment.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to relate effectively to students, staff, parents, and visitors.
  • Must be available for all required residence hall openings and closings.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate good clerical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to answer the phone and accurately record messages for the Residence Hall Director and other hall staff.
  • Attend all required training workshops and scheduled staff meetings.
  • Knowledgeable of and able to articulate college policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

  • Experience as a student worker or office aide.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office programs.

Special Notes to Applicants

Maximum of 19 hours per week

Must be able to safely ascend and descend stairs in residence hall buildings where elevators are not available or during emergency situations.
Must remain alert and attentive to the safety and security of the residence hall and its residents.
Must be available to work scheduled shifts between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM. Work schedules may vary based on residence hall needs and may change from semester to semester.
Must be available to work assigned residence hall opening and closing periods, as required.
