Position Summary
The Elementary VALSS Tutor provides supplemental, high-impact tutoring to students identified as needing additional academic support in reading and/or mathematics through the Virginia ALL In Tutoring (VALSS) initiative. Tutors work with students individually or in small groups using evidence-based instructional strategies to accelerate learning and improve academic achievement.
The tutor collaborates with classroom teachers and school administrators to support student growth while maintaining a positive, engaging, and supportive learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide tutoring to elementary students in reading and/or mathematics.
- Deliver instruction using division-approved curriculum and evidence-based instructional practices.
- Work with individual students and small groups during the school day and/or after school as assigned.
- Assist students in strengthening foundational academic skills.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate tutoring records.
- Communicate regularly with classroom teachers regarding student progress and instructional needs.
- Encourage student engagement, confidence, and academic success.
- Participate in required training and professional development related to the VALSS program.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and School Board policies.
- Follow all division policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED required.
- Experience working with elementary-age students preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of elementary reading and mathematics instruction.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students.
- Effective classroom management and instructional support skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Basic computer skills, including Google Workspace and educational technology.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school day.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to supervise students in a classroom setting.
