What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dog Trainer position at BlackDog Behavior and Training, LLC?

BlackDog Behavior and Training, LLC (www.blackdogbt.com) provides positive reinforcement training throughout New Castle County, Delaware beaches, Philadelphia, and surrounding areas, and provides consulting to multiple local shelters and rescues on a contract basis. We are looking for an R professional who is passionate about our mission and will be invested in our longterm growth and community impact! Since our launch in 2021, we have grown from a 1 person company to a multi-person team, helped nearly 2000 dog guardians, contracted with over 14 different shelters and rescues, and purchased a brand new training facility.
We are currently hiring for 1 to 2 part-time independent contractor positions at our Wilmington training location & Northern Delaware in-home service area, hours flexible depending on client intake!
Wilmington Training Facility (207 Boxwood Rd, Wilmington DE)
- Starting Schedule:
- Tuesday - Saturday (open to discussing specific days): am and midday/afternoon coverage needed at training facility (work with board & train and drop-off day training clients).
- In addition to the facility shifts indicated above, you will also have the option to add as many days of private client hours in your preferred service area that you would like! *We would love if you are willing to service Middletown south through Kent County for in-home services, but not required*
Responsibilities:
- Private training clients:
- Puppies, basics, and behavior modification - we are especially in need of someone who has experience/comfort with dog-dog dynamics, as well as fear/anxiety/reactivity/aggression (including bite history)
- Must be willing to drive to in-home sessions, provide virtual training, as well as travel to our training facility for onsite services.
- Facility services
- Assist with afternoon training sessions for board and train and daycation (day training drop-off clients)
- Facilitate drop-offs and/or pick-ups for daycation clients
- Perform evening care duties for board and train dogs (walks/potty, feeding, meds, and spot cleaning).
- Opportunity to take board and train dogs into your own home, if your living situation and experience allows
- Contribute ideas and recommendations for program success
- Other responsibilities
- Lead group classes/workshops at our training facility as well as at partner location(s)
- Responsible for maintaining your own private client notes and email communication
- Program support and development
- Bring initiative and creativity to existing BlackDog programs, and take ownership of your own programs, services, and ideas you’d like to see implemented at the company
- Assist with writing class/workshop curriculum(s) and branded powerpoints, create/update/maintain library of branded handouts and behavior protocols, etc
- Assist with social media content (take videos and pics during your sessions, provide to management or upload directly to BlackDog’s or your own training instagram!)
- Maintain general cleanliness/organization of facility, including:
- Assist with monitoring and maintaining inventory of supplies at training facility
- Assist with flagging maintenance needs at training facility
- Prep/set-up and cleanup for your own clients and training sessions
Commission Pay Structure
- Monthly commission pay amount is not guaranteed and is based on revenue intake
- 50% Commission pay will apply to all group classes, private consults, single sessions, and package sessions. Up to 60% available for specialty/niche certifications such as CSAT, CDBC, CBCC-KA, etc or niche behavior categories such as sports, protection, service/therapy dog work, etc
- Facility Shift Commission:
- Full shift (6 - 8 hrs)
- 30%-35%/dog/shift
- Half shift (3 - 5 hrs)
- 20% - 25%/dog/shift
- 50% commission if only one dog is signed up for services in a given day/shift, with only one service provider
- Additional board & train commission
- 25% commission for stay in-home, with shared training by team, as if “living” onsite
- Will be pro-rated off B&T day rate if only partial in-home stay
- 50% commission for full case (all in-home care & training)
- May only be approved by BlackDog management
- Should not interfere with normal onsite responsibilities
- Commission pay accounts for administrative work (notes, photo/video upload, communicating between sessions, etc), no additional hourly pay will be provided for these duties.
- 1099 employees have the ability to deduct more expenses, and may end up paying less in taxes than W2 employees. Make the most of your 1099 status with these resources .
Base Requirements:
- Must possess a current driver's license and be willing to travel to clients.
- Must have weekend and evening availability as needed.
- Must already be certified or pursuing/willing to pursue a certification through CCPDT, IAABC, Karen Pryor Academy, Victoria Stilwell Academy, Fear Free, Academy for Professional Dog Trainers, CATCH, or another approved accredited organization. If you have obtained a certification and do not see the organization listed here, we still encourage you to apply and your experience will be discussed during the interview process.
- Prior private training and/or group class experience strongly preferred.
- Must be willing to participate in shelter and rescue work as needed
- Must be able to tolerate difficult conditions (inclement weather, chemical exposure, unruly/strong dogs, etc)
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $50.00 - $92.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20.0 – 35.0 per week
