Position Title: Temporary Contract Mental Health Counselor (Summer Camp)

Schedule: Mondays, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (2 workshops each Monday)
Program Dates: June 15, 2026 – July 25, 2026

The Black Women's Mental Health Institute (BWMHI) is seeking a compassionate and engaging Mental Health Counselor to support elementary and middle school students participating in a summer camp program in Birmingham, Alabama. This temporary contracted position offers an opportunity to positively impact youth by facilitating age-appropriate mental wellness activities, promoting emotional resilience, and providing psychoeducation in a supportive group setting.
The counselor will lead weekly one-hour sessions focused on social-emotional learning, emotional regulation, self-esteem, healthy coping skills, communication, and overall wellness.
Both Associate Licensed Counselors and Fully Licensed Counselors are encouraged to apply.
- Facilitate weekly mental health and wellness sessions for elementary and middle school students.
- Develop and deliver engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote emotional wellbeing.
- Teach coping skills, stress management techniques, emotional regulation, and positive communication.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for youth participants.
- Collaborate with camp staff regarding student engagement and program needs.
- Maintain appropriate professional and ethical boundaries.
- Document attendance and submit brief session summaries as requested.
- Report any safety concerns in accordance with Alabama laws and ethical standards.
- Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field.
- Associate Licensed Counselor or Fully Licensed Mental Health Professional in Alabama, including:
- Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC)
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
- Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
- Other equivalent behavioral health licensure
- Experience working with children and/or adolescents.
- Strong communication and group facilitation skills.
- Ability to engage youth from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience in school-based, community-based, or youth development settings.
- Training in trauma-informed care.
- Experience facilitating social-emotional learning or psychoeducational groups.
- Knowledge of culturally responsive and strengths-based approaches.
- Compensation: $75–$100 per workshop based on education, licensure status, and relevant experience.
- Independent contractor position.
- 2 One-hour sessions each Monday during the summer program period.
