Hours per Week: 3-4
SUMMARY OF POSITION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for assisting peers with disabilities and/or medical conditions as they acclimate, navigate, and experience college life at Bismarck State College (BSC). Promote the development of self-reliance, self-determination, and self-advocacy skills. Activities may include in-class academic support, homework and study sessions, social events, recreational opportunities, weekly planning, and/or volunteer service-learning activities.
Position Description & Details
- Maintain scheduled hours.
- Assist peers to help foster a successful transition to the college environment.
- Plan and enjoy activities with peers. Activities will vary based on the needs of the peer.
- Attend mentor training and meetings.
- Complete Peer Mentor Feedback Forms after scheduled activities with a student peer.
Minimum Requirements
- Current student at BSC
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Time management and organizational skills
- Willingness to participate in BSC campus events and community events
- Academic and study skills if assigned to assist a peer with in-class or academic supports
- Criminal history record check
Preferred Qualifications
- Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0
- Experience working with people who have diverse needs
- Experience serving as a peer mentor in an academic setting
