Summary of Position: 

Bismarck State College is seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Assistant Teaching Professor of Music - Instrumentation to join our faculty. The successful candidate will support student success by directing instrumental ensembles, including Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Pep Band. This role involves a commitment to excellent teaching, student mentoring, and active participation in campus activities. 

COMPENSATION: Full-Time, special non-tenure track position. Competitive salary based on directly related experience and education.

  • 9 months: $47,100 - $58,874

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Directing instrumental ensembles, including Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Pep Band
  • Preparing music for BSC events
  • Recruiting students for performance ensembles
  • May also include teaching courses such as Music Theory I & II, Aural Skills I & II, Applied Lessons, Music Appreciation, and World Music
  • Facilitating State and Regional music festivals
  • Participation in professional organizations such as NDMEA
  • Assessing students
  • Committee work
  • Coordination with ensemble instructors, 
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Appropriate music-related master's degree
  • Demonstrated successful experience with conducting concert bands or other large ensembles
  • Documented successful experience with private music lessons
  • Documented successful experience with recruiting collegiate students
  • Documented successful experience directing pep band
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and ability to work as a team member
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good working knowledge of computer software programs (i.e., Microsoft Office, email, & electronic calendar - Outlook)
  • Creative in using a variety of teaching resources, media, and instructional technologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate (PhD or DMA)
  • Experience with distance delivery of courses
  • College teaching experience
  • Active member in a state organization such as NDMEA
  • Experience with community and school outreach for music
  • Experience with a wide range of repertoire (i.e., classical, contemporary, multicultural, etc.)
  • Experience with concert planning, budgeting, and event coordination
