About the Role:

The Senior Power BI Specialist will optimize, re-architect, and enhance a high-visibility Power BI application used by senior leadership at one of our financial service clients. This role requires deep technical expertise in Power BI, strong understanding of data architecture, and the ability to operate quickly in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment. The consultant will review the existing solution, identify performance bottlenecks, implement best practices, and redesign components if necessary. The individual must be comfortable handling extremely complex datasets and collaborating closely with senior stakeholders.

You must have valid US work authorization and must physically reside around the posted city, within a 50-mile commute. We are unable to support relocation costs.

Key Responsibilities:

Power BI Architecture Review & Optimization:

• Conduct a full assessment of the current Power BI application architecture.
• Identify inefficiencies in data models, queries, DAX calculations, visuals, refresh cycles, and overall performance.
• Implement best practices to improve speed, load times, refresh reliability, and user experience.
• Recommend and execute redesigns where structurally necessary.

Dashboard & Data Model Enhancement:

• Work with complex, large-scale datasets.
• Simplify and optimize data models for scalability and maintainability.
• Apply advanced DAX, query folding, aggregation strategies, incremental refresh, and performance tuning.
• Ensure dashboards follow UI/UX best practices for readability and executive presentation.

Collaboration With Internal Engineering Teams:

• Coordinate with internal teams responsible for backend systems, data pipelines, and microservices.
• Validate assumptions about ETL pipelines, refresh schedules, and data availability.
• Provide guidance to technical teams to ensure the overall ecosystem supports dashboard performance.

Executive & Stakeholder Engagement:

• Interface directly with senior leadership, and other business owners.
• Translate technical decisions into clear business impacts.
• Manage expectations around quick turnaround times and iterative improvements.
• Present findings, proposed changes, and progress updates regularly.

Required Skills & Experience:

Technical Skills:

• 7–10 years of deep Power BI experience (architect-level preferred).
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Expert-level knowledge of:
• DAX (advanced calculations and optimization)
• Power Query (M language)
• Data modeling (star schema, relationships, aggregations, partitions)
• Performance tuning for large datasets
• Power BI Service & Workspace configuration
• Understanding of broader data ecosystem components:
• Databases (SQL)
• ETL/ELT pipelines
• APIs / microservices
• Data governance best practices
• Full-stack knowledge preferred but not required.

Soft Skills:

• Ability to thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced delivery environment.
• Strong communication skills; must be able to explain architectural choices clearly.
• Comfortable presenting to and taking direction from senior executives.
• A proactive problem-solver who can deliver quick wins while planning long-term improvements.

**The base salary range for this role is $120,000 - $175,000**
