Position Summary: The Maintenance Technician is an entry-level position within the Facilities Team. Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Maintenance Technician performs a variety of manual labor, maintenance, landscaping, and general construction support duties to assist in the maintenance, repair, improvement, and upkeep of tribal housing units, housing developments, and Tribal Offices.
This position is designed to provide hands-on experience and training for individuals seeking a career in facilities maintenance, construction, or property management. The Maintenance Technician is expected to demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn new skills while contributing to the Tribe’s mission of providing safe, clean, and well-maintained housing and Tribal offices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
General Maintenance
- Assist with routine maintenance and repairs of tribal housing units.
- Perform basic carpentry, painting, drywall repair, and flooring repairs under supervision.
- Assist with plumbing and electrical repairs as directed by qualified staff.
- Replace light fixtures, smoke detectors, air filters, door hardware, and other building components.
- Clean, prepare, and maintain vacant housing units for new occupancy.
- Assist with preventative maintenance inspections.
Grounds Maintenance
- Mow, trim, weed, prune, and maintain landscaping around housing properties.
- Remove trash, debris, and illegal dumping from tribal properties.
- Assist with irrigation repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain sidewalks, parking lots, fences, and common areas.
Construction Support
- Load, unload, and transport construction materials, tools, and equipment.
- Assist skilled maintenance personnel during renovations and construction projects.
- Demolish and remove damaged materials safely.
- Prepare work sites and clean project areas upon completion.
Equipment & Vehicle Operation
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and maintenance equipment.
- Operate tribal vehicles in accordance with tribal policies.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition.
- Report damaged equipment or safety concerns immediately.

- Follow OSHA safety standards and tribal safety policies.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report hazardous conditions.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment.

Customer Service
- Interact professionally and respectfully with tribal members, residents, vendors, and coworkers.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding residents and housing matters.
- Represent the Housing Department in a courteous and professional manner.

Other Duties
- Assist during emergencies, weather events, and community projects.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
- No prior maintenance experience required.
- Previous experience in construction, landscaping, maintenance, or manual labor is preferred but not required.

- Valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification if required.
- Ability to successfully complete any required safety training.

- Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
- Preference in hiring is given to qualified American Indians in accordance with the Indian Preference Act (Title 25 U.S. Code, § 472 and 473). Applicants claiming Indian preference must submit verification by Tribe of affiliation or other acceptable documentation of Tribal Enrollment.
- Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Able to pass a BVR drug test.
- Work involves periods of sitting, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities, and lifting moderately heavy items, up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to satisfactorily complete a background check and a pre-employment screening.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification if required.
