What are the responsibilities and job description for the CDL Driver / Heavy Equipment Operator position at Big Jay's Earthworks, LLC?
About Us
Big Jay's Earthworks is an owner-operated, fast-growing excavation and sitework company based in Vinton, VA serving the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia. We handle excavation, grading, land clearing, forestry mulching, pond construction, hardscaping, and site prep for residential and commercial projects. We run almost exclusively new CAT equipment (2023-2026 models), pay weekly, and keep our crews busy year-round.
Read this first: This is a seasoned operator's seat, not an entry-level job. We're looking for one highly experienced hand who can show up, haul, load, and run iron without hand-holding. If you have real years in the seat and behind the wheel, let's talk. If you're still learning, this one isn't for you yet.
The Role
This is a dual-skill position for someone who can both haul and operate at a high level. You'll run our dump truck to move material and transport equipment between sites, load and unload that equipment yourself, and operate our heavy machinery once you're on site. We need someone we can hand a job to and trust it gets done right.
What You'll Do
- Drive our dump truck to haul aggregate, dirt, spoil, and materials to and from job sites
- Transport heavy equipment between sites on a trailer or lowboy, and load and unload it yourself safely, correctly, and without damaging the machine or the deck
- Operate heavy equipment including excavators, skid steers, bulldozers, and mini excavators
- Perform excavation, grading, trenching, land clearing, and site preparation to grade
- Complete DOT pre-trip and post-trip inspections and secure loads properly
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
- Follow all DOT and OSHA safety procedures on the road and on job sites
- Communicate with crew leads about job progress, site conditions, and any issues
What We're Looking For
- Several years of real, full-time experience operating heavy equipment. This is our top filter. We want proven seat time, not occasional or hobby experience.
- Proven ability to load and unload heavy equipment on a trailer or lowboy. You've ramped dozers and excavators on and off a deck many times and know how to do it safely. This is a must.
- Valid CDL required. Class A strongly preferred; we'll consider Class B for the right, highly experienced candidate.
- Current DOT medical card, or the ability to obtain one
- Clean, acceptable driving record
- Solid experience hauling a dump truck and equipment on a trailer or lowboy
- Ability to read grade stakes, dig to grade, shape slopes, and finish clean
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Reliable, low-drama, shows up on time and puts in the hours
What We Offer
- New equipment. You run clean, late-model CAT iron.
- Variety of work. Excavation, grading, clearing, mulching, ponds, hardscape.
- Top pay for the right, experienced operator
- Overtime available. 40 to 60 hours a week for someone who wants the hours.
- Weekly pay
- Equipment and tools provided
- Work truck available depending on role and experience
- Year-round work. We run snow removal in winter in addition to earthwork.
- Growth opportunity with a company that's scaling fast
