Make a Difference.

Are you an experienced dog trainer with a passion for rescue work and a heart for second chances? Join the largest no-kill dog rescues in the United States, where your skills and compassion can truly transform lives.

At Big Dog Ranch Rescue, we're more than a shelter—we're a movement dedicated to saving, rehabilitating, and rehoming thousands of dogs each year. We're seeking a skilled and dedicated Rescue Trainer who's ready to work hands-on with our dogs, guiding them on the journey from rescue to adoption.

What You'll Do

As a Rescue Trainer, you'll be at the core of our training and enrichment programs—working to build trust, reduce fear, and prepare dogs for loving forever homes.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Behavior Training & Modification: Develop and implement positive reinforcement-based training plans tailored to each dog's individual needs, including fear, anxiety, aggression, and basic manners.
  • Play Group Leadership: Create and manage structured, safe playgroups for socialized dogs, promoting healthy interactions and exercise.
  • Enrichment Program Development: Design and lead stimulating activities that support each dog's mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
  • Collaborative Program Execution: Work closely with the Director of Training and Training Manager to refine training protocols and support day-to-day operations.
  • Adoption Readiness: Prepare dogs for successful adoption by teaching essential skills like leash walking, crate training, and social behaviors.
  • Mentorship & Coaching: Provide training, support, and guidance to staff and volunteers on safe handling, training techniques, and enrichment strategies.
  • Documentation & Communication: Maintain detailed records of training plans, behavioral progress, and incident reports. Communicate updates effectively to internal teams.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who's not only experienced in dog training but also driven by compassion and committed to improving the lives of rescue dogs.

Qualifications:

  • Professional Experience: Hands-on training experience with dogs in a rescue, shelter, or similar setting.
  • Behavior Knowledge: Proven ability to work with dogs showing behavioral issues such as fear, reactivity, or aggression.
  • Certification: CPDT-KA or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Capable of articulating behavioral insights and training plans to staff, volunteers, and adopters.
  • Adaptability: Skilled in customizing training methods to meet the unique needs of each dog.
  • Team-Oriented: Enjoys working collaboratively with a dynamic, passionate team.
  • Physical Stamina: Able to walk, lift, run, and engage with active dogs throughout the workday.
  • Commitment to Animal Welfare: Deep belief in our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome.
