Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Gulf Coast is the largest one-to-one mentoring organization in south Alabama and Mississippi. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We enlist volunteers, Bigs, to help children, Littles, realize their potential and build their futures. We nurture children and strengthen communities through two programs, Community and School-based. Through these two programs, we typically enroll children ages 6-15 and continue supporting the match through age 18. What sets us apart from other mentoring organizations is our ongoing, professional support for the duration of the match. Because we are a completely donor-supported organization, we depend on individuals and events periodically through the year for donations which creates new, life-changing friendships, sustain our ongoing mentoring programs, and enable us to continue new, expanded services to support children and families across south Alabama and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Position Purpose
The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that volunteers and youth are appropriately enrolled and matched while executing a high degree of independent judgement while utilizing BBBS standards and practices. This position is responsible for providing match support to ensure child safety, positive impact for youth, constructive and satisfying relationships between youth and volunteers, family connection and support, and a strong sense of affiliation with BBBS on the part of volunteers. This position will produce positive outcomes in the following areas: match closure rate, match retention rate, average match length, volunteer rematch rate, and customer satisfaction. The position designs and delivers programs that potentially generate revenue from corporate partners.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate/manage high impact relationships between ~ 90 mentee/mentor pairs, including monitoring participation; providing individualized attention; case management; proactively assisting relationships.
- Assess through scheduled in-person, telephone and electronic contact with matches, that the elements of child safety, healthy relationship development, risk management, match relationship development, positive youth outcomes and volunteer satisfaction are fulfilled, and that potential problems and barriers are identified and addressed as early as possible.
- Effectively assess and execute necessary relational support skills, such as: guide, support, confront, advise and/or negotiate; relate well in multicultural environments.
- Maintain accurate and timely records for each match according to BBBS Standards and utilize technology to report, synthesize, and analyze data.
- Provide timely and comprehensive written summaries of all contacts following BBBS Standards in the match management system, Matchforce (Salesforce).
- Administer match surveys and satisfaction measurement tools as scheduled and log into match management system, Matchforce.
- Provide individual or group training, coaching or support to each match participant (Big, Little, parent/guardian) tailored to their needs.
- Identify and eliminate barriers to match success for example, accessibility, scheduling, technology, transportation, and adapt support accordingly.
- Support match retention and longevity by designing and facilitating age-appropriate match activities, School-based parties, events or group workshops to engage Bigs, Littles and families.
- Use outcome measurement tools (surveys, YODPs – Youth Outcome Development Plans, SOR/YOS) and program data to monitor match quality, outcomes and inform improvements.
- Conduct exit interview with all parties at match closure. Assess reasons for match closure and re-match potential. When match terminates prematurely or unexpectedly, refer exit interview to supervisor for third party assessment.
- Conduct volunteer and youth reassessment for rematch according to BBBS Standards.
- Ensure high-level expertise in applying child safety and risk management knowledge, policies and procedures throughout all aspects of job function.
- Enhance the Corporate Big experience by cultivating the long-term sustaining relationship between BBBS and partners by effective stewardship and communication with current and potential volunteers.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with elementary, middle and/or high schools within the assigned county as needed.
- Work with strategically identified external partners (i.e., schools, community centers, corporations, etc.) to build relationships for youth referrals and family resources.
- Share with development, engagement, partnership, and/or marketing staff potential partnership relationships and stories as discovered through match contacts with Big, Little, and parent/guardian.
- Maintain customer service at levels exceeding expectations of our partners, volunteers, parents, and youth.
- Be an ambassador for BBBS by always maintaining a professional image, identifying and seizing opportunities to recruit volunteers, and furthering the mission of BBBS.
- Attend required meetings, continuing education programs, and events as scheduled.
- Establish and promote positive communication among all team members of BBBSCGC to increase collaboration and reduce inefficiencies.
- Represent BBBS in a professional manner at all times while providing courteous service to both internal and external constituents and presenting a positive image of BBBSCGC.
- Abide by BBBSCGC policies and practices.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in Human Services, Social Services, related field, or experience in social services, education, and/or child development is preferred. Or you may have 6 months or less to graduate college with bachelors, we can allow for 2-year degrees with 2 years relevant experience, or 4 years relevant experience in fields related to experience.
- Proven experience working with children or in social services.
- Strong understanding of child development, behavioral health, or special education.
- Excellent communication and conflict management skills.
- Ability to build trusting relationships with diverse populations.
- Experience in mentoring, social work, or child welfare is highly desirable.
- Passion for youth development and community service.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour
