What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Media Marketing Specialist position at Big 5 Sporting Goods?
The Opportunity
Big 5 is ready to accelerate the next chapter of its social media presence, and this role will help lead that evolution. We are looking for a hands-on, performance-minded social media builder who can turn content, trends, creator partnerships, and data into stronger engagement, greater brand relevance, increased traffic, and measurable business impact.
This is an excellent opportunity for a creative, analytical marketer who wants real ownership: shaping the content calendar, testing new formats, improving channel performance, building creator and influencer programs, and helping Big 5 show up with more energy, relevance, and consistency across social platforms.
The Social Media Performance Specialist will own the day-to-day management and optimization of Big 5's social channels, with a focus on short-form video, content performance, influencer integration, and audience growth. The ideal candidate is equal parts strategist, executor, analyst, and collaborator - someone who enjoys building systems, spotting opportunities, moving quickly, and turning insights into action.
This highly visible role reports to the Manager of Digital Marketing with direct access and interaction with the VP of Marketing as well as the Chief Marketing Officer.
What You'll Build and Own
Content Strategy, Ownership and Optimization
- Own and evolve the social content calendar across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Pinterest, ensuring each platform has a clear purpose, cadence, and performance goal.
- Bring fresh, platform-specific ideas to the table, especially around short-form video, product storytelling, retail moments, and trend-driven content.
- Use performance data to continually refine creative formats, hooks, timing, cadence, and content mix.
- Lead test-and-learn initiatives that help Big 5 move faster, learn smarter, and scale what works.
- Ensure social content aligns with brand voice while connecting seamlessly to broader campaigns across email, site, paid media, promotions, and seasonal initiatives.
Influencer and Creator Program Ownership
- Help build and grow Big 5's creator and influencer approach from strategy through execution.
- Identify, evaluate, and recommend creators who align with campaign goals, product priorities, customer interests, and brand values.
- Support outreach, negotiations, partnership development, content coordination, and campaign execution.
- Track performance and translate learnings into recommendations that improve future partnerships, ROI, and impact.
- Bring forward creator content ideas that feel authentic, useful, and inspiring to Big 5 customers.
Performance Analytics and Insights
- Own weekly and monthly social performance reporting, including engagement, reach, traffic, follower growth, and content-level performance.
- Turn data into clear insights, practical recommendations, and next-step actions for internal teams.
- Monitor short-form video performance and identify repeatable patterns in winning content.
- Support a testing roadmap across hooks, formats, audiences, cadence, product stories, and calls to action.
- Regularly share insights with stakeholders to help the organization understand what is working, what is changing, and where social can create more impact.
Content Performance and Revenue Impact
- Partner with Ecommerce and Merchandising teams to connect social storytelling to key product priorities, selling moments, and seasonal campaigns.
- Support content that drives qualified traffic and strengthens the path from discovery to conversion.
- Identify opportunities for social content to influence downstream performance, including site engagement, email, paid media, and revenue impact.
- Help bring product stories to life in ways that are relevant, timely, and platform-native.
Paid Social and Growth Collaboration
- Spot high-performing organic content and partner with paid media teams to scale it through boosting and amplification.
- Support paid social creative development by helping ensure assets are platform-right, audience-aware, and performance-oriented.
- Contribute ideas to grow followers, increase engagement, and deepen audience connection.
Community Engagement and Brand Experience
- Oversee daily monitoring of social channels, including comments, DMs, mentions, and customer interactions.
- Help ensure Big 5 shows up with a consistent, helpful, and brand-right voice.
- Support contests, giveaways, and engagement initiatives that build community and spark participation.
- Surface customer feedback, questions, and content opportunities that can inform broader marketing efforts.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Creative, Ecommerce, Customer Service, Merchandising, paid media, and brand/vendor partners.
- Make social an integrated part of product launches, promotional campaigns, seasonal moments, and brand storytelling.
- Secure assets, coordinate timelines, and help bring campaigns to market with clarity and momentum.
- Serve as a proactive social voice in cross-functional conversations, bringing ideas, insights, and recommendations that elevate the work.
What You Bring
