Position Summary
The Speech Therapist (SLP) provides evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for residents with speech, language, communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders within a congregate living health facility. The SLP works closely with physicians, nurses, caregivers, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and family members to improve residents’ quality of life, communication abilities, and swallowing safety. Responsibilities commonly include patient evaluations, individualized treatment planning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and documentation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluate residents for speech, language, cognitive, voice, and swallowing disorders
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on physician referrals and resident needs
- Provide speech and swallowing therapy services to residents in a congregate living setting
- Implement therapeutic interventions to improve communication and cognitive functioning
- Assess and manage dysphagia and swallowing safety
- Educate residents, caregivers, and family members on therapy techniques and communication strategies
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with state and federal regulations
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate resident care plans
- Monitor resident progress and adjust treatment plans as needed
- Participate in care conferences, discharge planning, and staff in-service training
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, infection control, and facility policies
- Maintain professional and ethical standards of practice
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
- Current California Speech-Language Pathologist license required
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) preferred
- Current CPR certification preferred
- Experience in skilled nursing, assisted living, rehabilitation, or congregate living facilities preferred
- Knowledge of dysphagia management and cognitive-communication therapy
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist residents during therapy sessions
- Ability to lift and move therapy equipment as needed
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents and healthcare staff
Work Environment
This position is performed in a congregate living health facility serving medically complex and long-term care residents. The SLP may work with residents requiring respiratory support, rehabilitation services, or memory care assistance.
