JOB TITLE:                                                                LEAD CUSTODIAN

 

DEPARTMENT:                                                           Maintenance

 

GRADE:                                                                    52

 

FLSA:                                                                       Non-exempt

 

REPORTS TO:                                                            Principal, Maintenance Director

 

SUPERVISES:                                                            Building-level custodians

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:                                           12 months

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  __Graduation from high school or equivalency

                            __Experience in custodial work and in operating computer programs

                            __Some leadership experience is preferred

 

NATURE OF WORK:  This position supervises custodial services in a school.  The employee receives general instructions regarding work assignments and independently directs the details of the assignments.  The employee assigns custodial personnel to work locations and determines their work loads.  The employee resolves minor problems independently and consults a superior when complex problems arise.  The employee receives general supervision.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of custodial work and associated supplies, materials and equipment
  • Basic electrical, heating/air, and plumbing skills
  • Working knowledge of office repairs and maintenance
  • Ability to supervise other custodians
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a variety of people
  • Ability to estimate long-range requirements for custodial personnel, supplies, materials and equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

  1. Explains and/or demonstrates work procedures to custodians and other employees
  2. Provides in-service training for custodians and other employees
  3. Assigns custodians to work area(s) and duties
  4. Makes rounds to determine if work stations are manned and inspects work of custodians
  5. Directs correction of deficiencies discovered during inspections
  6. Maintains simple clerical records of supplies and personnel information
  7. Notes needs to repair or replace equipment and submits notice to supervisor
  8. Requisitions cleaning supplies and materials
  9. Issues cleaning supplies and materials to custodians
  10. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks and driveways, neat and clean at all times
  11. Keeps grounds free from rubbish
  12. Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition
  13. Regulates heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity
  14. Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate
  15. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy
  16. Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture
  17. Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all fixture and drinking fountains daily
  18. Washes all windows on both the inside and the outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary
  19. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in good state of preservation
  20. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

 

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Lead Custodian job classification within Bertie County Schools.

 

Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Must be able to:

  • Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • Use a variety of measuring devices
  • Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm’s length
  • Operate machinery and equipment including hand tools and job specific equipment and tools, etc.
  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work 
  • Observe general surroundings and activities
  • Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken work levels
  • Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens, which may require specialized personal protective equipment

 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work is typically performed in the Central Office and all schools.
