JOB TITLE: WIDE AREA NETWORK ENGINEER
DEPARTMENT: Instructional Technology Department
FLSA: Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Technology
SUPERVISES: None
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months
QUALIFICATIONS: __ Completion of a four-year degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems,
or a related field with coursework in networking and two years of network experience including wide area networks, and supervisory training or experience; or
__ Associate’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, two years’
experience in a wide area network environment, supervisory training or
experience; or
__ Any equivalent combination of training and experience.
__Knowledge of networking protocols, experience in routed and frame
relay network environments, experience with network management
utilities
__Certification in network operating systems’ software such as Novell
Administrator, Novell Engineer, or Microsoft Engineer, or other
appropriate hardware certifications, such as Cisco, or
__Any equivalent combination of training, certification, and/or
experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
NATURE OF WORK: The Wide Area Network (WAN) Analyst is responsible for designing and implementing wide area networks in a local school agency. Employee supervises the installation, maintenance, and operation of a wide area network and associated computer hardware and software. Employee coordinates with the Director of Instructional Technology and Coordinator of Technology Services the evaluation of school system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure. Employee diagnoses and resolves complex wide and local area network issues.

- Designs and implements wide area networks including network firewall, switches, routers, wireless access points, and other peripheral devices.
- Installs and configures all necessary networking devices.
- Acts as a backup for maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure.
- Operates and maintains wide area networks, tracks significant problems, monitors performance, and performs upgrades to hardware and software as required.
- Installs or modifies existing installations of networked computer hardware, software, and other components.
- Manages design, cleanliness, and capacity of physical networking equipment and cabling infrastructure.
- Ensures the safety of users and equipment, including compliance with fire codes.
- Maintains accurate and current inventory and documentation.
- Participates in long- and short-range technology planning.
- Trains technical staff at the system and building level to follow proper operating procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the network.
- Maintains documentation regarding network configurations, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software.
- Collaborates with Technology Support Analyst to support end-user devices.
- Collaborates with Network Services Engineer to plan and design adequate network infrastructure.
- Provides training for staff as appropriate.
- Seeks and participates in opportunities for professional growth.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Wide Area Network Engineer job classification within the Bertie County Schools.
Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must be able to:
- Walk, lift, reach, stoop, sit, squat, bend, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch and type for extended periods of time up to 10 hours
- Prepare, read, comprehend and analyze a variety of complex forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation and correspondence in all languages required by the job
