Job Overview
Berry Green Processing is seeking a reliable and mechanically inclined Power Plant Operator Assistant to support the daily operation and maintenance of a multi-unit natural gas power generation facility. This role provides hands-on experience with industrial generators, engines, pumps, HVAC systems, emissions systems (including SCR), and auxiliary plant equipment while working closely with experienced operators and technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist operators with starting, stopping, and monitoring generators operating in parallel
- Perform routine plant rounds inspecting engines, generators, switchgear, pumps, HVAC systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, and emissions/SCR systems
- Monitor plant parameters including load, voltage, frequency, temperatures, pressures, and emissions performance
- Respond to alarms and abnormal conditions under supervision - Support preventive maintenance (oil changes, filter replacements, inspections)
- Assist with repairs of engines, pumps, and auxiliary equipment
- Assist with basic troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and emissions systems
- Assist with electrical troubleshooting using multimeters, amp clamps, and basic diagnostic tools
- Assist with monitoring and maintaining SCR systems, including DEF/urea systems and catalyst performance
- Maintain operating logs and maintenance records
- Help manage spare parts, tools, and consumables
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of plant areas
- Follow all safety procedures including PPE, lockout/tagout, and confined space protocols
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
- Basic understanding of engines, generators, pumps, or industrial equipment
- Basic knowledge of HVAC systems (chilled water, air handling, or cooling systems preferred)
- Familiarity with basic electrical concepts (voltage, current, safety)
- Ability to use multimeters and clamp meters to measure voltage, current, and continuity
- Strong attention to detail and safety awareness
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in power generation, industrial maintenance, HVAC, or similar field
- Experience or exposure with emissions systems or SCR systems (a plus)
- Exposure to generator controls, switchgear, or paralleling systems (ComAp a plus)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75–100 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb stairs/ladders
- Comfortable working around noise, heat, and rotating machinery
Schedule & Work Environment
- Must be flexible to work shifts, weekends, and on-call as needed
