What are the responsibilities and job description for the Trial Court Clerk II position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
- Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties for the Trial Court, including public counter, police, cashiering, and assignment functions.
- Handles courtroom and assignment clerk tasks, serves as back-up court recorder, and assists with case preparation across criminal, civil, and traffic divisions.
- Enters and updates case information in the court system, including post-judgment actions.
- Receives and receipts payments for fines, bonds, fees, restitution, and probation costs; accepts traffic civil infraction pleas and assesses fines per judicial instruction.
- Prepares court documents, reports, forms, and correspondence; manages mail and responds to phone inquiries regarding case status, schedules, and court procedures.
- Swears in complainants and witnesses, processes warrants and bond actions as directed, and maintains court calendars, judgments, garnishments, and vouchers.
- Assists with pretrial reports and schedules for magistrates and probation officers.
- Supports supervisor with mandated reports, file retention, and destruction. Cross-trained to provide coverage across court functions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent and one year of general clerical experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- May be required to obtain state certification as a Certified Electronic Recorder (CER) or Certified Electronic Operator (CEO).
- Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license throughout the course of employment.
- A pre-employment physical, drug test and background check are required before employment.
- Will be fingerprinted and subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds; reach and bend; and sit/stand for prolonged amounts of time.
- May be assigned to work at any Berrien County Trial Court location.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Proficiency in the use of standard computer software, particularly word processing and spreadsheet programs.
- General knowledge of court and legal procedures, with the ability to make decisions according to established procedures, policies, and court rules.
- Will be required to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and interact professionally with the public.
TYPING REQUIREMENT:
