The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through grade 12 college preparatory school of approximately 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of New York City. Our vibrant intellectual community draws students from all over the city, admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement and community.
Berkeley Carroll's Roarbots (Team 7036) is a growing high-school robotics team that competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). Each season, students design, build, and program a robot to meet the challenges of the competition.
Working out of the school's Beta Lab—a 2,000-square-foot makerspace equipped for mechanical fabrication, design, and programming—the Roarbots foster teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving. The assistant coach will help guide this program as students develop technical expertise, persistence, and confidence through hands-on engineering.
This is a temporary, part-time, non-exempt position, from January 12-February 13, 2026.The position is generally scheduled Monday through Friday between 3:00–7:00 p.m., but the employee will not be needed every day during that time frame. This person would serve as the Assistant Robotics Coach from January 12-20 and the Head Coach from February 2-12.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentor high-school students as they design, build, and program a competition robot in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Support engineering, fabrication, and programming processes, providing guidance in mechanical design, prototyping, and testing.
- Maintain a safe and organized makerspace, ensuring proper use of tools, materials, and shared work areas.
- Assist with project management, helping students balance creativity with real-world budgetary, material, and time constraints.
- Cultivate an inclusive team culture that welcomes students of all backgrounds and experience levels.
- Participate in competition preparation and events, assisting with logistics, pit operations, and robot performance.
Qualifications
- Expertise in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- Experience with FIRST Robotics or a comparable engineering design program.
- Strong background in metal fabrication and mechanical design.
- Proficiency with CAD software, particularly Autodesk Fusion 360.
- Basic understanding of computer programming, ideally Java.
- Strong communication and mentorship skills, with an enthusiasm for and experience with working alongside middle school and/or high-school students in a hands-on setting.
