The Underground Telecommunications Construction Field Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing multiple field crews for optimal efficiency. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with company standards and client specifications. The Foreman serves as the primary field leader, coordinating resources, personnel, and equipment across multiple job sites.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of multiple crews, including but not exclusive to:
- Directional drill crews
- Excavation crews
- Cable plow crews
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate construction activities across multiple work sites
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with project plans, specifications, and safety regulations
- Monitor production, track progress, and adjust resources to meet deadlines and budgets
- Conduct site visits to ensure quality control and operational efficiency
- Lead and enforce company safety policies and OSHA compliance standards
- Coordinate with project managers, clients, inspectors, permitting authorities, and landowners
- Review and interpret construction drawings, utility locates, and bore plans
- Troubleshoot field issues including utility conflicts, equipment challenges, and environmental conditions
- Manage crew performance, provide coaching, and support workforce development
- Ensure proper documentation, including daily reports, production tracking, and as-built records
- Oversee equipment utilization, maintenance coordination, and material logistics
- Support estimating and pre-construction planning when needed
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in underground telecommunications construction
- Proven experience managing multiple crews and job sites simultaneously
- Strong knowledge of:
- Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)
- Trenching and excavation
- Cable plowing operations
- Fiber optic installation practices
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and utility locates
- Ability to create as-built maps & digital production reports
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards and best practices
- Proficiency with project tracking tools, tablets, or field reporting software
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with large-scale fiber deployment projects (FTTH, backbone, or middle mile)
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Experience working in rural and urban right-of-way environments
- Knowledge of DOT and municipal permitting processes
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Primarily field-based role with frequent travel between job sites
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and terrains
- Capable of walking job sites, standing for extended periods, and occasional lifting (up to 50 lbs)
- Availability for extended hours, including weekends, as project demands require

- Salary: $90,000–$105,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and certifications. Candidates with significant underground telecom construction leadership experience, HDD expertise, and OSHA/CDL credentials may be considered above the posted range.
