Farm Project Manager

Bennington County Conservation District
Bennington, VT Part Time
POSTED ON 8/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/2/2026

The Bennington County Conservation District is seeking a Project Manager to lead the development of the Bennington Veteran Incubator Farm (BVIF).

This is a unique opportunity to help build a new agricultural enterprise that supports veterans, strengthens the local food system, and creates pathways to long-term farm ownership and leadership.

About the Program

The Bennington Veteran Incubator Farm is a two-year initiative on 12 acres of leased land that provides hands-on training, mentorship, and market access for veteran farmers. Participants work together to build a cooperative business that can stand on its own after the startup phase.

What You’ll Do

As Project Manager, you’ll serve as both a leader and a collaborator. You’ll work closely with veteran farmers, community partners, and mentors to guide the program forward.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development of the cooperative farm and organizational structure
  • Recruiting and supporting veteran member farmers
  • Coordinating farm planning, operations, and infrastructure development
  • Managing communications, outreach, and community events
  • Writing grants and managing project funding
  • Building partnerships with technical service providers and mentors
  • Supporting cooperative decision-making and leadership development
  • Leading farm work days and hands-on activities

This role includes $20,000 in annual base compensation from BVIF in addition to the support package available through a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA service term. That includes a $24,962 living allowance paid bi-weekly by AmeriCorps, plus eligibility upon successful completion for either a $7,395 Education Award or a $1,800 end-of-service cash stipend. The position may also include a $750 relocation allowance for eligible members relocating to Vermont, as well as access to a health reimbursement plan through IMG Global.

Who We’re Looking For

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing fieldwork, leadership, and big-picture planning.

Required:

  • Must be a military veteran (preferably discharged within the past 10 years)
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (e.g., Squad Leader, Lead Petty Officer, or similar)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Preferred:

  • Interest or experience in agriculture
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Experience with grants, fundraising, or project management
  • Comfort working in both office and outdoor settings

You don’t need to be a lifelong farmer—enthusiasm, reliability, and a desire to build up your community matter most.

Work Environment

  • Mix of office, field, and community work
  • Opportunity to operate and learn farm equipment
  • Flexible, mission-driven work culture

Why Join Us?

This position is an opportunity to:

  • Help fellow veterans transition into farming
  • Build a cooperative business from the ground up
  • Gain leadership and entrepreneurial experience
  • Make a lasting impact on Vermont’s working lands and food system
  • Be part of a supportive, values-driven team

If you’re ready to grow food, grow leaders, and grow community, we’d love to hear from you.
