What are the responsibilities and job description for the Woodshop Assistant position at Bengston Millwork?
About the Job
As a Woodshop Assistant at Bengston Millwork, you'll join a small, highly skilled team of craftspeople dedicated to producing exceptional custom furniture, architectural millwork, cabinetry, and specialty display fixtures. As a close-knit team of fewer than 10 employees, everyone wears multiple hats, collaborates across departments, and contributes to every stage of the fabrication process.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start or grow a career in woodworking. You'll work alongside experienced cabinetmakers and fabricators, learning the fundamentals of custom woodworking while helping keep the shop organized, efficient, and running smoothly. No two days are exactly alike—you may be preparing materials one day, assisting with assembly the next, or helping fabricate custom retail displays and scenic elements for unique projects.
Like any small fabrication shop, everyone pitches in to keep the workplace clean, safe, and organized. That means this role includes both hands-on woodworking and general shop responsibilities such as cleaning work areas, taking out trash and recycling, organizing materials, and helping maintain the facility. If you're someone who enjoys staying busy, takes pride in your work, and wants to learn a skilled trade, this is a great opportunity to grow.
We're looking for someone who is dependable, hardworking, eager to learn, and enjoys working with their hands. A positive attitude, willingness to help wherever needed, and pride in producing quality work are more important than years of experience.
Responsibilities
- Assist cabinetmakers and fabricators with day-to-day woodworking and production tasks.
- Sand, clean, and prepare wood components for assembly and finishing.
- Apply edge banding using shop equipment and hand tools.
- Assist with basic woodworking operations, including cutting, drilling, assembly, and hardware installation under the guidance of experienced team members.
- Load, unload, move, and organize lumber, sheet goods, finished parts, and other materials throughout the shop.
- Help receive deliveries, organize inventory, and maintain material storage areas.
- Keep workstations, tools, common areas, and the shop clean, organized, and safe.
- Empty trash and recycling, sweep floors, clean restrooms and break areas, and assist with general facility upkeep to maintain a professional working environment.
- Assist with packing, crating, and preparing completed projects for shipment or installation.
- Support the fabrication of custom furniture, architectural millwork, cabinetry, retail displays, and scenic elements.
- Learn the safe operation of woodworking machinery and hand tools while following all shop safety procedures.
- Drive company vehicles for local material pickups or deliveries when needed (for qualified drivers).
- Work closely with the entire team to help projects stay on schedule while maintaining Bengston Millwork's high standards of craftsmanship.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Interest in woodworking, fabrication, carpentry, or building things by hand.
- Eagerness to learn new skills and grow within a custom woodworking environment.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to do whatever is needed to support the team—from learning woodworking skills to helping keep the shop clean and organized.
- Ability to work well as part of a small, collaborative team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to safely lift materials weighing up to 75 pounds, stand for extended periods, and perform the physical requirements of a manufacturing environment.
- Eligible to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some woodworking, carpentry, construction, manufacturing, or shop experience.
- Experience using basic hand and power tools.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Forklift experience is a plus (training available if needed).
