Job Overview:
The Head Varsity Football Coach at Bellarmine Preparatory School leads a competitive, mission-driven football program that forms student-athletes in mind, body, and spirit in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. The coach is responsible for the overall direction, culture, and success of the football program, ensuring that all aspects align with Bellarmine’s mission to develop young men and women as fearless competitors, faithful leaders, and servants for others.
Core Functions and Duties:
- Demonstrate and integrate cura personalis (care for the whole person), magis (the pursuit of excellence), and service to others in all aspects of the program.
- Anchor the program in Ignatian Spirituality and Jesuit charism in partnership with the school.
- Foster an inclusive, disciplined, and accountable team environment that emphasizes respect, teamwork, belonging, sportsmanship, and the formation of moral character.
- Support student-athletes in meeting their academic responsibilities, communicate with teachers and counselors as needed, and promote a culture where academic excellence is expected.
- Design and implement a comprehensive, year-round football plan (off-season, pre-season, in-season) focused on skill development, tactical understanding, physical conditioning, and safe techniques.
- Develop game plans, manage practice organization, analyze opponent tendencies, and make in-game adjustments that give the team the best opportunity to compete for league and state championships.
- Encourage reflection, team-building, service projects, and leadership opportunities that help student-athletes grow spiritually and personally.
- Recruit, mentor, and supervise assistant coaches; ensure they understand and embody Bellarmine’s mission, program standards, and expectations for conduct.
- Communicate clearly and consistently with players, families, athletic trainers, administrators, and staff; handle concerns with transparency, professionalism, and confidentiality where appropriate.
- Oversee all aspects of the football program including tryouts, roster decisions, practice and game schedules, equipment and uniforms, and collaboration with strength and conditioning and athletic training staff.
- Promote a safe environment, follow best practices related to football safety and concussion protocols, and collaborate closely with athletic training and medical personnel.
- Ensure adherence to all school, league, and WIAA rules and regulations, as well as Bellarmine policies and standards for student-athlete eligibility and conduct.
- Represent Bellarmine Athletics positively in the wider community, support school-wide events, and collaborate with admissions and advancement efforts as appropriate.
- Partner with administration to engage and network the broader community about Bellarmine athletics and programs.
- Collaborate with sub-varsity and junior-level coaches to build a vertically aligned football pathway that emphasizes fundamental skills, virtue-based culture, and consistent teaching progressions.

- Student-athletes demonstrate growth in integrity, compassion, and conscience on and off the field.

Qualifications:
Qualifications/Competencies:
- Prior successful high school or higher-level football coaching experience preferred, with demonstrated leadership of a program or position group.
- Demonstrated understanding of contemporary football systems, schemes, practice organization, and player development techniques.
- Commitment to Jesuit, Catholic education and to working with a diverse student body, with willingness to learn and integrate Ignatian spirituality and values.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships with student-athletes, families, colleagues, and community partners.
- Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills, including the ability to set clear expectations and hold others accountable with care.
- Ability to motivate and inspire student-athletes to reach their full potential athletically, academically, and personally.
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain prior to season) and successful completion of all required background checks and trainings
Additional Employment Opportunities:
The Head Varsity Football Coach position is a stipend role. Separately, and based on institutional needs, available positions, and candidate qualifications. Bellarmine Preparatory School may consider qualified candidates for full-time employment in other roles at the school. Any additional employment would be independent of the coaching stipend and subject to standard hiring process.
