JOB SUMMARY
Bellarmine Preparatory School seeks an experienced and mission-driven Director of Athletics and Activities to provide strategic leadership, culture development, and operational oversight for all interscholastic athletic programs and school-sponsored activities.
Rooted in the Catholic Jesuit tradition and principle of cura personalis – care for the whole person – this leadership role ensures that athletics and activities serve as an integral part of the school’s educational mission. The Director of Athletics and Activities fosters competitive excellence, student formation, and program consistency while establishing clear standards for coaches, program leaders, and student participants.
This position provides executive leadership for all athletic programs and strategic oversight of school-sponsored activities. The Director of Athletics and Activities oversees all coaching staff and directly supervises the Dean of Student Life, who oversees school-sponsored activities including Model UN, Robotics, Drama, and other co-curricular programs.
The Director of Athletics and Activities collaborates closely with senior leadership, including the Principal, Business Office, Human Resources, Advancement, Communications, Admissions, and Campus Ministry to ensure athletics and activities are fully integrated into the life and mission of the school.
CORE FUNCTIONS OR DUTIES
The Director of Athletics and Activities leads the strategic vision, culture, and operational management of Bellarmine’s interscholastic athletic programs and co-curricular activities. This role ensures programs operate with consistent standards of leadership, accountability, safety, and mission alignment while supporting the holistic development of students.
This position establishes department-wide expectations for coaching leadership, student formation, program sustainability, and community engagement while maintaining strong partnerships with faculty, staff, families, alumni, and governing athletic organizations.
MAIN FUNCTIONS
Mission Leadership & Jesuit Identity
- Champion the Catholic Jesuit mission within all athletic and activities programs.
- Ensure programs reflect Ignatian values and the formation of students as men and women of competence, compassion, and conscience.
- Integrate reflection, service, character formation, and leadership development across athletics and activities.
- Align department policies and program expectations with the broader mission of Bellarmine.
Department Leadership & Culture Development
- Establish and maintain a unified culture across athletics and activities aligned with Bellarmine’s identity: One Team. One Mission. One Family.
- Develop and enforce clear standards for coaching leadership, communication, and program accountability.
- Monitor program performance and address cultural or operational concerns proactively.
- Foster a collaborative environment among coaches, faculty, and program leaders.
Leadership of Coaches & Athletic Programs
- Partner with Human Resources to recruit, hire, onboard, and supervise coaching staff.
- Implement a structured evaluation process for all coaches focused on program culture, athlete development, communication, and competitive performance.
- Provide leadership development and professional growth opportunities for coaches.
- Ensure adherence to WIAA regulations, school policies, and student safety standards.
- Oversee scheduling, program operations, and long-term sustainability across all athletic programs.
Student-Athlete Formation & Well-Being
- Promote the holistic development of student-athletes academically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
- Support healthy balance between athletics, academics, and student life.
- Foster safe, inclusive, and respectful environments across all programs.
- Uphold policies that protect student health, dignity, and well-being.
Strategic Leadership & Institutional Collaboration
- Lead long-term strategic planning for athletics and activities.
- Collaborate with the Business Office to develop and manage department budgets.
- Ensure equitable allocation of resources across programs.
- Partner with Advancement on fundraising initiatives supporting athletic programs.
- Work with Communications and Admissions to promote programs and support enrollment vitality.
- Coordinate with Facilities and Operations to ensure safe, well-maintained athletic environments.
Activities Oversight
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for school-sponsored activities.
- Supervise the Dean of Student Life to ensure programs operate with consistent standards and expectations.
- Support the development of vibrant co-curricular opportunities that enhance the student experience.
Community Engagement & Representation
- Serve as the public representative for Bellarmine athletics and activities.
- Build strong relationships with parents, alumni, and community partners.
- Represent Bellarmine within WIAA and other governing bodies.
- Promote athletics and activities as a unifying force within the school community.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES
Required:
- Commitment to Catholic, Jesuit education and student formation.
- Leadership experience in athletics administration, coaching leadership, or related fields.
- Strong organizational, communication, and relational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, establish standards, and build program culture.
- Strong fiscal management and analytical skills.
- Knowledge of high school athletic governance and WIAA regulations.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders across a school community.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in athletic administration, education, or related field.
- Experience working with Jesuit or faith-based educational institutions.
- Experience with high school athletics compliance and governance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Director of Athletics and Activities must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

- Ability to attend evening and weekend athletic events and school activities.
- Ability to travel occasionally for league meetings or athletic events.
