Role Overview/Description:
A Mapping Geologist is a geologist who specializes in the detailed observation, documentation, and interpretation of geological features at mining or construction sites. In this role, you will create geological maps and cross-sections of rock outcrops, mine workings, or project areas, providing critical information on lithology, structure, mineralization, and alterations that guide exploration and mining decisions. Often working as part of a mine geology or exploration team, the Mapping Geologist spends significant time in the field (such as traversing open-pit benches, underground drifts, or natural outcrops) to record geological data and then compiles this data using GIS or modeling software. The role bridges pure field geology with practical mine planning: by accurately mapping ore bodies and geologic structures, you help identify where valuable material is located and how to extract it safely and efficiently. This position is vital for maintaining up-to-date geological models of an operation, for spotting new opportunities (or hazards) revealed by exposures, and for ensuring that the geological understanding of the site remains current as mining or construction progresses.
Responsibilities:
- Geological Field Mapping: Conduct regular geological surveys of exposed rock faces in open pits, underground workings, or project excavations. Document lithologies (rock types), mineral occurrences, structural features (faults, folds, joints), and alteration zones by visual inspection and measurement.
- Sample Collection & Analysis: Collect rock or soil samples during mapping for further analysis (assays, petrography, etc ) when interesting mineralization or geotechnical conditions are encountered. Work with laboratory personnel to interpret results, and integrate geochemical or assay data with your maps to outline ore zones versus waste more clearly.
- Map Production: Prepare detailed geological maps, sections, and plans of the surveyed areas.
- Geologic Interpretation: Interpret the significance of observed geological features for the project’s goals
- Collaboration with Mine Planning: Work closely with mine engineers and planners, providing them with up-to-date geological information that could affect mine designs or schedules.
- Grade Control Support: In active mining areas, assist the Ore Control or Grade Control Geologist by mapping mineralization boundaries on bench faces or underground headings.
- Reporting: Compile your findings in concise reports or memos after each mapping campaign or bench mapping round.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay current with modern mapping techniques and tools.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field
- Field Experience: Prior fieldwork experience in geological mapping is highly desired (this could include field camp, thesis research mapping, or previous employment as a field geologist). Ability to work in outdoor conditions and rough terrain is a must, as mapping often requires hiking, climbing on rock faces with proper safety gear, and enduring weather extremes
- Proficiency in geological mapping tools and software.
- Strong analytical and observation skills.
- Effective communication skills – both in writing and verbally.
- Teamwork and independence: capable of working solo in the field for mapping, but also able to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team
- Familiarity with safety protocols for field work, especially in active mine sites or construction zones
- A valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.
