Facilities Maintenance Technician

The Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for the comprehensive upkeep, safety, and appearance of Beacon Recycling's facilities and grounds. This is NOT a housekeeping position, it is a skilled maintenance role requiring ownership of all building systems, grounds maintenance, and property safety. This position demands a proactive, self-motivated individual who takes pride in maintaining a safe, clean, and professional environment.

The Technician "owns" all aspects of property maintenance including work requests, work orders, preventative maintenance, and emergency response to ensure operational continuity and a positive impression for customers, employees, and visitors.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Building Maintenance & Ownership

• Take full ownership of all building maintenance work requests, work orders, and preventative maintenance schedules
• Perform general building maintenance including simple electrical work, plumbing repairs, HVAC filter changes, and door/lock repairs
• Execute painting projects for buildings, small boxes, hoppers, and equipment
• Parts Running
• Inspect property regularly to identify areas for improvement or repairs, promptly reporting unsafe conditions
• Maintain and organize maintenance tools, equipment, and supply inventory
  
  

Fire & Safety Systems

• Own all fire protection systems including fire sprinklers and fire extinguisher maintenance
• Conduct monthly fire extinguisher inspections and coordinate annual certifications
• Monitor fire sprinkler system functionality and coordinate with vendors for testing and repairs
• Maintain accurate records of all fire safety inspections and maintenance
  
  

Grounds Maintenance & Landscaping

• Maintain outdoor appearance through landscaping tasks including mowing, mulching, raking, planting, and trimming
• Keep property free of debris and rubbish
• Operate grounds maintenance equipment safely and efficiently
  
  

Snow Removal & Winter Maintenance

• Ensure safe conditions by plowing, shoveling, and snow blowing all pathways and parking areas
• Apply ice melt and sand as necessary to prevent slips and falls
• Be available for immediate response during snow events, including early morning and after-hours callouts
  
  

Facility Cleaning & Equipment Operation

• Perform sweeping inside and outside facilities using industrial sweeping equipment
• Conduct janitorial duties to maintain clean, professional work environments
• Operate sweepers, forklifts, loaders, and other heavy equipment safely
• Perform pre-operation inspections and basic maintenance on equipment
  
  

Work Order Management

• Complete work orders promptly and safely, prioritizing emergency, preventative, and routine tasks
• Document completed work orders with details of work performed and materials used
• Identify and recommend improvements to maintenance processes
  
  

Customer Service & Multi-Site Support

• Provide excellent customer service to visitors and maintain professional appearance
• Travel between Beacon locations as needed (up to 25% of time)
• Collaborate with operations teams to minimize disruption during maintenance activities
  
  

Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Technical or trade school training in building maintenance preferred
  
  

Work Experience

• Minimum 2 years of experience in building and grounds maintenance or facilities maintenance
• Experience with general building maintenance including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
• Experience with fire protection systems preferred
• Previous experience in industrial or commercial facilities preferred
  
  

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid driver's license required
• Forklift certification required (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
• Loader/heavy equipment operation experience preferred

• Knowledge of groundskeeping equipment and landscaping tasks
• Basic electrical, plumbing, and HVAC troubleshooting and repair skills
• Understanding of fire sprinkler systems and fire extinguisher maintenance

• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 80 pounds occasionally

• Capable of working in confined spaces and at heights when necessary
• Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions
  
  

WORKING CONDITIONS

This role involves working in both shop environments and outdoor settings in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. Work may require exposure to dust, chemicals, noise, and industrial equipment. Must be available for emergency response including snow removal during early morning hours and after-hours emergencies. Travel between Beacon's Michigan locations required up to 25% of time. May include occasional weekend or holiday work for emergency situations.
