Beacon MedTech Solutions is seeking a Tooling Engineer to lead the design, development, improvement, and lifecycle management of precision injection molds used to manufacture medical device components.


This is a highly visible role that combines engineering expertise, supplier management, mold design, tooling optimization, and hands-on problem solving. You will work closely with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and external tooling partners to bring new tooling concepts to life and continuously improve existing mold performance.

Role Description

The Tooling Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Leominster, MA. The role involves designing, developing, and maintaining molds and tooling for various manufacturing applications, ensuring quality and efficiency. The Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance tooling capabilities, oversee injection molding processes, and provide support for product development and manufacturing improvements. Responsibilities also include troubleshooting tooling issues, optimizing designs for manufacturability, and utilizing advanced CAD tools to create accurate designs that meet project requirements.


Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize injection molds for medical-grade components in close collaboration with design, quality, and manufacturing teams.
  • Oversee and manage tooling projects from concept through vendor build, qualification, and production release.
  • Coordinate and perform mold repairs, refurbishments, and preventative maintenance to maximize tool life and minimize downtime.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve tooling-related production issues, collaborating with technicians and process engineers.

Source and manage domestic and international tooling suppliers, including issuing RFQs, evaluating designs, and overseeing build progress.

  • Conceptualize and design metrology, manufacturing and machining fixtures in collaboration with Engineering team.
  • Support validation activities including IQ/OQ/PQ, FAI, and capability studies for new and refurbished molds.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation, including 2D drawings, 3D CAD models, mold maintenance logs, and engineering change orders.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts related to mold performance, cycle time, cost, and ease of maintenance.
  • Apply DFM principles during design reviews to ensure manufacturability and serviceability of tools.
  • Ensure all mold tooling meets Beacon Medtech’s quality and compliance standards, including ISO 13485.
  • Lead DFM reviews with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Support quoting activities for new tooling and mold modifications.
  • Evaluate tooling concepts for manufacturability, maintainability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Develop tooling standards and best practices.
  • Support customer visits and technical discussions as needed.
  • Participate in New Product Introduction (NPI) projects
  • All other projects/teams/duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Deep understanding of injection molding processes, tool steels, mold components, and thermal management.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, mold flow analysis, and design for manufacturability.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with a proactive, hands-on approach to problem solving


Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3 years of experience in injection mold tooling engineering, preferably within the medical device or high-precision manufacturing industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with mold repairs, benching, and refurbishment processes.
  • Experience with mold design and detailing required.
