JOB DESCRIPTION
Beacon Inc. is currently seeking to fill a Shelter Monitor position for our overnight homeless shelter, A Friend's Place, which is open seven days a week from 5pm to 8am. Applicants must have a semi-flexible schedule and availability for the 2nd shift (5pm to 1am) and/or 3rd shift (1am to 8am). This would be an as needed substitute position and would not have guaranteed scheduled hours. You would be called in if full-time staff have emergencies or planned time off.
The Shelter Monitor job duties include overseeing the nightly shelter operations, monitoring and assisting our 40 guests, providing guidance on shelter policies, crisis intervention, behavioral management, maintaining a safe and peaceful living environment, and keeping track of guest attendance.
Essential skills include a passion for helping people experiencing homelessness, compassion for all kinds of people, an ability to set clear limits/boundaries with kindness, conflict resolution/de-escalation skills, and clear communication skills. Ability to work with and without onsite supervision, quick thinking in emergencies, basic local resources knowledge, good reading, writing and computer skills.
A degree in a social service or related field, and prior experience with marginalized populations will be highly valued but not required. Personal experience of homelessness is a plus!

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: occasional moving of objects up to 50 pounds, moving about to accomplish tasks and moving from one workstation to another. Constant communication with others to exchange information. Busy, multi-tasking environment.
