Position Overview
This hybrid role supports both back office clinical duties as a Medical Assistant and front desk responsibilities when coverage is needed. The ideal candidate is flexible, dependable, and comfortable transitioning between clinical tasks and administrative reception duties. This position requires excellent patient service, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage a fast-paced orthopedic clinic environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Practice Philosophy & Professionalism

- Adhere to all practice policies, procedures, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and practice activities.
- Present a professional image in behavior, communication, and appearance.

2. Medical Assistant (Back Office) Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Organize patient flow and escort patients to exam rooms.
- Obtain and document patient history, vitals, medication lists, and health concerns.
- Assist providers with exams and in-office procedures.
- Provide patient education and clearly communicate provider instructions.
- Perform phlebotomy, prepare injections, assist with specimen collection, and submit lab orders.
- Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, and boots; assist with DME fittings.
- Perform wound care, suture/staple removal, and sterile tray setup.
- Submit referrals, prior authorizations, MRI/CT/lab orders, and coordinate inter-office referrals.
- Call in prescriptions and refills to pharmacies.
- Obtain external x-ray or imaging reports when needed.
Clinical Operations
- Clean, disinfect, and stock exam rooms.
- Maintain and monitor medical supply inventory, including injections.
- Follow infection control and safety procedures.
- Prioritize tasks and complete duties within required timeframes.
3. Front Office / Reception Responsibilities (Coverage as Needed)
Patient Check-In & Communication
- Welcome and check in patients and visitors with professionalism and courtesy.
- Answer and route phone calls promptly using a multi-line phone system.
- Schedule appointments, procedures, and follow-ups per clinic guidelines.
- Maintain patient demographic and insurance information accurately in the EHR.
Financial & Administrative Tasks
- Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, deductibles, and co-pays.
- Collect payments and reconcile daily charges.
- Explain financial policies and unpaid balances to patients.
- Prepare patient charts, forms, and documentation as needed.
- Maintain clean, organized reception and waiting areas.
- Protect patient confidentiality in all interactions and documentation.
Patient Flow & Support
- Communicate delays or scheduling issues to patients and clinical staff.
- Maintain professionalism when addressing upset or frustrated patients.
- Screen solicitors courteously and appropriately.
4. Work Quality & Team Performance
- Perform duties accurately, efficiently, and with strong attention to detail.
- Seek clarification when needed and proactively learn new tasks.
- Follow timelines and complete assignments promptly.
- Support coworkers and contribute positively to team culture.
- Maintain current CPR certification.
5. Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED required; AA degree preferred.
- Completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 1 year experience as a Medical Assistant or in a medical front office setting preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance verification, and EHR systems required.
- Orthopedic experience is a plus.
Skills & Abilities

- Proficient with Microsoft Office and medical practice software.

6. Physical & Mental Requirements
- Sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 30 lbs.
- Use of medical equipment (stethoscope, BP cuff, cast saw) and office equipment (phones, computers, fax, copier).
- Ability to assist patients with mobility, transfers, and basic physical support.
- Ability to handle busy, stressful periods while maintaining professionalism.
