Job Description
We are seeking a Winder Operator I to join our production team. The ideal candidate will have experience in setting up and operating winding machines and tube saws and a proven ability to produce tubes to specification while maintaining quality, safety, and line efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Review job orders to determine proper equipment and materials, including mandrel size, belt, and paper size/width.
- Set up and operate winding machine by adjusting paper angles on dry stand and glue rack, spacing ribbons, preparing glue pots, and setting belt and paper tension.
- Splice additional paper to maintain production flow and verify outer diameter and core thickness hourly; document measurements.
- Set up and operate tube saw by selecting proper blades and adjusting for diameter, length, and even cut-off.
- Continuously monitor critical quality areas: safety, inside/outside dimensions, tube length, gap, adhesion, and ply spacing.
- Collaborate with Line Support, Line Lead, and Production Associates to complete full line set-up; serve as direct back-up to Line Lead.
- Perform routine maintenance, including lubrication and oiling of winder and saw; maintain clean machines and work area.
- Return equipment and unused materials to proper storage locations.
- Work safely, use all safety guards as intended, and instruct helpers in proper machine use.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One to three months of related manufacturing experience or training.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to complete production reports.
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Reasoning ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and solve problems with several concrete variables.
Preferred Skills:
- Prior experience operating winding machines and tube saws in a production environment.
- Familiarity with quality checks using pi tape and related measuring tools.
Physical Demands:
- Regularly stand, walk, use hands, reach, and communicate.
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Regularly lift/move up to 10 lbs; occasionally up to 25 lbs; rarely up to 50 lbs as a two-person task.
- Visual acuity for close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment:
- Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts with frequent observation of parts flow.
- Moderately loud noise level.
