General Summary:

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III is a healthcare employee that performs specific job responsibilities under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III is responsible for providing pharmacy services, including, but not limited to distributing pharmaceuticals, performing inventory control, assisting in the maintenance, preparation and distribution of intravenous admixtures, compliance audits, providing customer service, and maintaining pharmacy records. The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III works as a part of an interdisciplinary patient care team, and under direction of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor.

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III will distribute, manage, and store pharmaceutical products throughout the organization. The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III position will utilize and extend knowledge and competency while performing technical pharmacy functions of the Inpatient Pharmacy. The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III will assist in the training of staff under the direction and guidance of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and/or designee.

In addition to the above, the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III is responsible for working with Chemotherapy/Oncology and/or RIVA (KGH Only).

Responsibilities:

  • Dispensing: A. Interprets the patient-specific labeling correctly regarding medication, dose, dosage form, packing size and quantity. Using the previous information, accurately prepares the final product for review by a registered pharmacist. B. Replenishes medications in the Automated Distribution Cabinets accurately. (Follows departmental standards to ensure secure delivery of controlled and non-controlled substances. Scanning percentage.) C: Manage medication delivery process to include: (Timely and accurate delivery of medications. Timely retrieval of discontinued medications.) D: Complete unit dose cartfill and first dose dispensing activities. E. Completes dispense preparation.
  • Pharmacy Information Systems: A: Maintain competency on functionality of the pharmacy information systems, automation dispensing and other pharmacy technologies (Ex. Pharmacy Keeper). This includes report generation, trouble shooting, label and patient profile review.
  • Support Function: A: Exchange of crash carts and/or restock pharmaceutical trays (tech check tech). B: Expiration date checking to include central pharmacy, automation distribution cabinets, other medication storage areas and various kits (ex. Transport kit, etc.). C: Support the department as needed for inventory processes (ordering, receiving, patients own medications, etc.). D: Prepare medications by repacking oral suspensions, solutions, and tablets into unit dose packaging.
  • Patient Safety / Performance Improvement: A: Supports Bayhealth by maintaining a High Reliability Environment by following all safety measures (Keeps a clean and organized workspace. Utilizes department equipment in appropriate matters. Report near misses. Report any identified patient or employee safety issues.) B: Performance Improvement (Documents and completes 95% or higher of all required records (refrigerator temperature checks, pharmacy inspections, Pharmacy Keeper logs, etc.). C: Understand and follow all hazardous material related issues (USP Chapter 800).
  • Training and Education: A: Participates in on-the-job training of new pharmacy personnel including Pharmacy Technicians, students, residents, and pharmacists. B: Participates in ongoing educational activities to acquire and validate knowledge. C: Complete formal nationally recognized education related to sterile compounding and USP chapter 797 (i.e., ASHP competence). D: Complete specialized education related to hazardous compounding and USP Chapter 800. E: Must present at least 1 Technician Pearl per evaluation period.
  • Critical Thinking and Development: A: Answers phones and address issues of concerns or directs the phone call to appropriate personnel. B: Demonstrate an understanding of the prioritization of work based upon patient need, efficiency and pharmacy policies and procedures. Independently handles routine problem scenarios within the scope of the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III responsibilities.
  • Compounding: A: Complies with all USP 797 guidelines and Bayhealth policies and procedures. (Growth media testing. Glove test. Gowning procedures. Didactic Testing.) B: Cleans and maintains the sterile compounding areas in the accordance with USP 797/USP 800 and Bayhealth policies and procedures. (Cleans all counter tops, laminar flow hoods with acceptable disinfectants periodically as outlined in the policy. Maintains a work area that is neat and clean.) C: Stocks sterile compounding area with intravenous solutions, additives and all other supplies utilized in the area. D: Completes dispense prep by documenting lot number, expiration date and waste. E: Prepares on demand IVs in a timely manner per department guidelines.
  • Hazardous Compounding: A: Receiving, reviewing, and preparing physician orders for hazardous and non-hazardous medications including pre-medications and investigational drug agents. B: Performing accurate product selection, dose calculations and compounding of agents utilizing Electronic Health Record, manufacturer insert, written procedural guidelines and application of specialized knowledge. C: Prepare medications for the following day’s schedule, reviewing anticipated inventory needs and notify the buyer for products needed. D: Cleans and maintains the sterile compounding area in the accordance with USP 797, USP 800 and policies and procedures. E: Cleans all counter tops, laminar flow hoods with acceptable disinfectants periodically as outlined in the policies and procedures. F: Ensuring adherence to all policies and procedures for the safe handling, dispensing and disposal of cytotoxic drug agents. G: Complies with all institutional safety standards for patient and personal protection, including, but not limited to, use of Personal protective equipment (PPE), knowledge of hazardous waste disposal and spills as defined by hospital policy and USP chapter 800.
  • RIVA robotics: A: Maintains competency and knowledge of the various physical parts of the RIVA robot and possess a working knowledge of the respective functions of the parts. B: The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III must be able to perform problem resolution as needed including generating, analyzing, and resolving problem reports. C: The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III must be able to effectively use the administrative tools provided by RIVA. D: The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III must be able to perform required / scheduled maintenance and cleaning of the RIVA robot. Maintenance and cleaning must be documented appropriately including but not limited to the following timeframes. (Daily mini cleaning. Weekly full cleaning. Monthly Vesphene cleaning, Other cleaning or maintenance schedules as recommended by RIVA.) E: The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III must be able to effectively and efficiently perform the following routine tasks including but not limited to (Initializing RIVA cells, Managing RIVA inventory) F: The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III must be proficient at using and managing the various work queues as provided by RIVA including: (Manual queues and copying queues from templates, Inventory fills and production queues, New intermediary container queues)
  • All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.

Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Credential(s): Certified Pharmacy Technician, Sterile compounding competence, Hazardous Drug Management Certificate within 12 Months
  • Experience: Required: 4 years’ experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
