NATURE OF JOB:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Repairs, maintains, and services a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered fleet vehicles, construction equipment and other related apparatuses including lawn mowing/grass cutting equipment in a central garage and in the field.
• Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and inspection of vehicles and equipment; changes fluids, replaces filters, and lubricates vehicles and equipment.
• Repairs, maintains and services dump trucks, front end loaders, tractors, air compressors, bulldozers, excavators, graders and other heavy construction equipment.
• Diagnoses causes of equipment failure and malfunction, makes repairs, and tests equipment before returning to service.
• Repairs and services a variety of automotive and construction equipment electrical apparatus such as starters, alternators, distributors, voltage regulators.
• Repairs and services automotive electronic apparatus such as engine controls, safety restraint systems, and anti-lock brake systems.
• Repairs and changes tires on all types of vehicles and construction equipment in the field or shop.
• Responds to emergency road service as directed; changes tires, diagnoses problems and makes repairs, or transports vehicles to the appropriate facility for repair.
• Performs basic welding functions, such as repairing rips and tears in metal buckets used for digging.
• Requisitions parts, supplies and the components to facilitate timely repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
• Prepares maintenance records, to include the tracking of replacement parts, the consumption of gas, oil and grease and reports detailing work accomplished.
• Cleans work area, shop, and associated areas.
• Monitors tool and parts on hand inventory.
• Assumes responsibility for work area-organization/safety.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent, (preferably supplemented by formal course work in the trade); AND
• Four (4) years’ experience as a journeyman in the skilled repair of automotive and construction equipment.
• A comparable amount of training and/or education may be substituted for the minimum qualifications, with the exception of the required licensure.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:

• Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
• Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a Florida Commercial Driver’s license (minimum Class B) within six (6) months of hire as a condition of employment.
• Possession of or the ability to obtain and maintain the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) medium/heavy duty truck certifications (T3 - drive train, T4 – Brakes, and T5 – suspension/steering) for automotive repair within two (2) years of hire as a condition of employment.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools of the automotive mechanic trade.
• Knowledge of welding principles and techniques may be required.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
• Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines and of the repair and maintenance characteristics of a variety of automotive and construction equipment.
• Knowledge of the principles of operation of heavy-duty truck drive train.
• Knowledge of the principles of heavy-duty truck suspension and steering.
• Skilled in the use and care of the tools, machinery and equipment of the automotive mechanics trade.
• Ability to have excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.
• Ability to comprehend, speak, and read the English language.
• Ability to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
• Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts in specific repair problems.
• Ability to maintain shop records.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions, to work from diagrams and sketches and repair broken parts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).

This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.

Bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement of firm grasping and fine manipulation, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights. This position may require frequent lifting up to 100lbs and carrying up to 100lbs.

WORK LOCATION:

Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non-portable nature of the essential functions of this position, this position is not eligible for telework.
