The veterinary technician holds a key role in the practice, managing the technical workload of the day. Veterinary technicians must effectively interface with veterinarians, front office staff, and support staff. This position requires strong technical and animal handling skills, organizational skills, operational knowledge and the ability to lift 50 pounds and to stand for extended periods. Veterinary technicians are effective at handling client appointments, managing surgical suites and equipment, providing patient care and conducting diagnostics, assisting in surgery, and maintaining records and OSHA standards. Common veterinary technician duties include:

  • Demonstrate general knowledge of the practice and its services and policies

Conduct self with integrity and a commitment to the practice

  • Work efficiently and accurately to maximize productivity, taking initiative to find and complete tasks or assist other team members
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of pets, pet care, and veterinary medicine
  • Demonstrate computer competency and accuracy
  • Meet safety standards and follow safety procedures
  • Maintain a professional appearance and manner
  • Keep client and patient information confidential
  • Obtain patient histories and minimum databases
  • Create estimates
  • Manage distressed clients
  • Admit and discharge patients
  • Manage surgical, procedure, and treatment schedules
  • Dispense medications
  • Administer treatments (IV and SQ fluid therapy; Oral, IV and IM medications; apply wound dressings, bandages and splints; Enemas; Physical therapy and photobiomodulation therapy, Parasitic treatments, Oxygen therapy)
  • Conduct diagnostic testing: collect blood, perform cystocentesis, take radiographs, perform ECGs
  • Assist with surgical procedures (Patient prep, Placing endotracheal tubes, Monitoring)
  • Perform oral prophylactic care
  • Obtain dental radiographs
  • Perform dental scaling and polishing
  • Record results of dental evaluation and procedures
  • Perform non diagnostic appointments (nail trims, anal gland expressions, grooming, ear cleanings, vaccination appointments, labwork collections)
  • Run the in-house laboratory by maintaining equipment, stocking supplies, conducting controls, evaluating samples, running tests, and recording results
  • Provide basic life support
  • Monitor and maintain inventory
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Veterinary Technician Certification - must be licensed or able to be licensed as a veterinary technician in the state of Maryland
  • Proficiency in animal handling and restraint
  • Strong knowledge of veterinary terminology and animal anatomy
  • Experience in medication administration and catheterization
  • Familiarity with dental terminology and critical care procedures
  • Ability to review and maintain accurate medical records

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
