Mechanic Job Description

Summary

This position is to inspect, maintain and repair transit utility vehicles, motorized equipment, building and grounds and all equipment within, while maintaining proper documentation of all work performed as required by the FTA.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Mechanics perform routine to complex skilled maintenance and repairs to BART transit utility vehicles and powered equipment. Mechanics inspect vehicles and equipment, diagnose and repair problems. Incumbents inspect, diagnose and repair problems with the building and grounds and contents. The work is performed under the general direction of the Operations Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Inspects, services, repairs and overhauls a variety of transit vehicles and equipment.

Troubleshoots and performs basic and difficult repairs including replacement of engines, transmissions, Overhaul of electrical systems, brakes, axles, wheelchair lifts, ramps and related securement, and all other supporting systems.

Performs preventative maintenance and general servicing to vehicles including changing fluids, greasing, safety inspections, etc.

Performs emergency road work to buses and related equipment, replacing on-the-road vehicles as necessary.

Road test vehicles to diagnose mechanical problems and evaluate service after repairs.

Performs general building maintenance as needed.

Assists in maintaining accurate parts inventory and accountability for all parts used.

Cleans shop area and equipment.

Maintains equipment/vehicle repair and maintenance records.

May respond to emergencies during non-working hours.

Must be able to report to work promptly and on a regular basis.

Must be able to take direction and work well with others.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

High school diploma or equivalent, vocational/technical training in diesel mechanics, five years vehicle/equipment mechanic experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must have or be able to obtain a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) permit with passenger endorsement within 90 days on the job. Must be able to maintain CDL for employment. Must be able to maintain a good driving record. Knowledge of working hazards and safety practices. Knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving techniques.

Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.

Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as maintenance records, work requests, maintenance reports, equipment operating/repair manuals, parts manuals, electrical diagrams, hydraulic system schematics, procedures and guidelines, work schedules, bus schedules, street maps and directions.

Ability to communicate effectively with bus operators, Transit management, bus riders, outside transit services and citizens. Ability to maintain effective public relations.

Ability to administer safe workplace rules and procedures to fellow employees, along with the ability to identify occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Ability to effectively communicate through the use of two-way communication devices.

Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability

Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgment in performing diversified work activities.

Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable criteria.

Physical Requirements

Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions, and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as city vehicles/equipment including buses, fuel pumps, mechanic's and shop bench tools, welder, cutting torch, engine analyzers, air conditioning coolant recovery equipment and electrical circuit testers. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.

Ability to exert heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, pushing and pulling.

Ability to safely operate a large vehicle in traffic and close quarters.

Environmental Adaptability

Ability to work under often unsafe and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, machinery, electrical currents, traffic hazards, wetness and/or dust can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in numerous situations. Must possess the ability to understand BART rules and apply them while operating.
