Ensure all Bay Transit passengers have a safe and timely ride to meet their transportation needs to work, retail, medical, legal, educational or recreational facilities. Reports to the Regional Transit Operations Supervisor.

Essential functions

  1. Pick-up and drop-off passengers as scheduled in the scheduling software or deliver meals to Bay Aging clients.
  2. Perform vehicle inspections using software on tablets.
  3. Passenger safety: Ensure all passengers have their seatbelt fastened. Assist passengers with special needs when entering and existing the bus. Is responsible for securing wheelchairs.
  4. Maintain contact with dispatcher by two-way radio and tablet.
  5. Accommodate last-minute route changes when instructed by the dispatcher.
  6. Responsible for maintaining a clean bus inside and out.
  7. Responsible for collecting fare or transit tickets from passengers and completing appropriate paperwork.
  8. Responsible for completing an electronic timecard accurately every day. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Rely on experience and knowledge of the service area to drive safely and efficiently. Perform a predetermined and limited number of tasks. Work closely with dispatchers to ensure passengers have a safe and timely ride.

Decision making is limited to the exact order of the route to pick up and drop off passengers. You must contact the dispatcher when deviating from the manifest.

Working knowledge of:

  • Electronic tablets and two-way radios.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions when working vehicles and transporting passengers.

Ability to:

  • Operate 14-passenger transit bus safely and drive about 300 miles per shift.
  • Use a tablet
  • Interact with passengers in a courteous manner.
  • Handle small amounts of cash accurately and responsibly
  • Work a flexible schedule Monday through Friday with occasional night and weekend work.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work in the bus with some physical requirements (ability to lift 50 lbs., walking and climbing stairs, assisting passengers, and pushing wheelchairs. Limited exposure to weather conditions.  None of the essential functions of the position can be performed virtually.

Qualifications:

High school Diploma or equivalent. You must possess a valid active Virginia driver’s license with no restrictions and 3 plus points on your motor vehicle record before being considered for a driving position. You must not have any major violations, such as DUI, DWI, reckless driving, or hit-and-runs. Also, minimal moving violations and preventable accidents in the last few years.

FLSA status: This is a non-exempt position.
