ATR Experiment System Engineer

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking an Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Experiment System Engineer to support the development of advanced nuclear energy systems and experimental infrastructure critical to the nation's energy future. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located at our ATR facility with every Friday off.

In this role, you will collaborate with project teams to define system requirements and ensure design solutions meet applicable codes and standards, while also serving as a design engineer when needed. You will evaluate, design, maintain, modify, install, and test facility and process support systems to sustain operational readiness and initiate corrective actions when necessary. Your responsibilities include developing and implementing procedures for facility and equipment operations, analyzing incidents to inform preventive measures, and directing activities to ensure efficiency and adherence to safety standards. Additionally, you will maintain configuration management and technical baselines, develop loop chemistry requirements, and provide ongoing support to operations, maintenance, and project personnel to ensure systems meet both operational and research objectives.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • As member of project team tasked with developing a new experiment water loop system, communicate system requirements to the design engineering team.
  • Ensure codes and standards compliance during project development.
  • Function as design engineer when required by Experiment Design team.
  • Evaluate, design, maintain, modify, install, and test facility systems and process support systems to ensure continued operational readiness.
  • Initiate corrective actions.
  • Develop and write procedures for the modification and/or operation of facilities, equipment, and processes.
  • Examine accidents to obtain data for designing preventive measures.
  • Direct operating or maintenance activities to ensure efficiency and conformity to safety standards.
  • Develop and maintain configuration management and the technical baseline of multiple systems and component groups.
  • Develop and modify loop chemistry requirements.
  • Support facility operations, maintenance personnel, and project personnel to ensure systems and equipment meet operational and research needs.

Required:

  • Level 3: Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related engineering field and 5 years of relevant working experience, or an advanced degree in the same fields and 2 years of relevant working experience. All degrees must be from a program accredited by ABET.
  • Level 4: Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related engineering field and 9 years of relevant working experience, a Master of Science in the same fields and 6 years of relevant working experience, or a PhD and 4 years of relevant working experience. All degrees must be from a program accredited by ABET.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

  • Current or previous experience at ATR in any capacity.


Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288) / Level 4 ($114,360 - $234,336). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
