The Practical Nursing Instructor provides comprehensive instruction to practical nursing and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program students. One primary component of the assignment is to provide classroom and clinical instruction to students, including curriculum development and delivery for both programs. This position may be assigned to a variety of clinical rotations in acute care or long-term care facilities and will teach didactic and practical exercise portions of the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum for the practical nursing and CNA programs. The instructor will also lead the development and implementation of CNA curriculum aligned with state and industry standards. Incumbent will participate collaboratively and professionally with faculty and staff to promote the general well-being of the department and the college, and collective and individual interest of its staff and student body. Incumbent will support the guiding expectations of the college embodied in the mission and vision.


This is a 214 days a year, 7 hours a day, non-tenure track position.  Multiple (2) openings possible.  These positions will be open until filled. Essential Functions 
  • Teach, coordinate and provide both clinical and didactic instruction to nursing students that help develop student competency in the utilization of all elements of the nursing process, planning and organizing their work schedules, assisting as a nurse in teaching clients, functioning as a Licensed Registered Nurse within the health care delivery system including interpersonal skills, problem solving and decision making
  • Coordinate the delivery of instruction to nursing students with the other nursing program faculty and ensure that instruction design and delivery supports the approved objectives of the program
  • Instruct nursing students in either of the nursing programs and at off-site clinical rotations
  • Monitor student outcomes with other nursing faculty and employers and adjust course content to facilitate student success
  • Write, develop and update course curriculum documentation, including performance objectives, competencies, lesson plans and content by analyzing industry needs in the field of nursing.
  • Develop and/or maintain industry-based program accreditation, and/or ensure students are prepared for and have the opportunity to obtain relevant industry credentials and certifications
  • Ensure that instruction is consistent with current industry standards, technologies, procedures, equipment and materials
  • Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities in support of regional accreditation and state and federal requirements
  • Faculty advisor role includes mentoring, encouraging, counseling and guiding students toward the completion of program requirements i.e., interpersonal relationships, career goals and responsible work habits
  • Ensure that appropriate safety practices are used at all times, students are knowledgeable of safety techniques, and all equipment is maintained in a safe working condition Use effective evidence-based teaching techniques, instructional materials, and appropriate media support in conducting classroom and laboratory projects.
  • Provide individualized instruction, as needed
  • Work with other instructors and support services personnel to ensure a cohesive vocational learning environment dedicated to providing industry with qualified entry-level persons
  • Remain current with industry standards in order to ensure that instruction is consistent with current technologies.
  • Be knowledgeable of and equitably enforce College policies, regulations, and College operating procedures
  • Maintain accurate written records and timelines as required. 
  • Requisition, maintain control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program
  • Cooperate with and assist administration in its responsibility in the recruitment of students and promotion of their program
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Develop and/or maintain industry-based program accreditation, and ensure students are prepared for and have the opportunity to obtain relevant industry credentials and certifications. 
  • Deliver classroom management to maintain suitable learning environment by responding appropriately to student conduct/problems and aid in solving them in accordance with college procedures.
  • Provide budget management which includes requisition and maintenance control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program.
  • Lead and participate in Nursing Program committees
  • Participate in professional development activities and be willing to obtain a Master’s degree within three (3) years of the start of the employment.
  • Participate in the program advisory committee

Non-Essential/Other Functions

  • Maintain friendly and cooperative relationships with respective Healthcare partners. 
  • In cooperation with other program faculty, maintain program approval status through the Washington State Nursing Commission and work toward National accreditation.
    • Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities in support of regional accreditation and state and federal requirements. 
    • Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
    • Participate actively and collaboratively with College Student Services and program advisory committees to support access to employment opportunities for students, and maintain student job placement records.
    • Accountable for keeping personal development up-to-date; adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses, professional development committees, etc. 
    • Participate actively and collaboratively on committees for college as needed including but not limited to staff recruitment, college councils, etc.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by Bates Technical College local union.
  • Following date of hire, all full-time faculty and all part-time faculty working two-thirds of a full-time load for more than three quarters (20 hours per week) must obtain Professional-Technical Education Certificate within 30 working days.
  • Maintain Healthcare provider/CPR
  • Record of current immunizations
  • This position is required to work both on campus and at clinical sites which are typically 10 to 25 miles from campus and occasionally up to 50 miles from campus.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License and reliable vehicle for reimbursable travel
  • Maintain Washington State Registered Nurse License

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a normal, temperature-controlled office environment. 
  • Work in semi-open office setting with frequent interruptions and background noise.
  • Work is performed indoors in a classroom environment and off-campus training. 
  • Can be exposed to hazards such as chemicals, infectious diseases, strong odors and loud noises.

  • Occasional to frequent change in position from sedentary, standing, stooping and walking
  • Occasionally kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing
  • Move up to 25 lbs. occasionally including reaching, pushing and pulling
  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screens
  • Visual focus and strain
  • Requires visual concentration on details
  • Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions with finger manipulation 
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. 
  • Work directly with students/clients
  • Work involves constant interruptions and requirement to answer on demand questions by phone, in person, or electronically
  • Frequent oral and auditory communication with others (speaking, hearing, etc.)
  • Learning and comprehending (reading, writing, verbal communication, etc.)
  • Occasionally be required to deal with distraught people
  • Respiratory equipment used that may require adherence to applicable safety rules and standards

Minimum Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university
  • Five (5) years nursing experience
  • Must possess an unencumbered Washington State RN License
 
Allowable Substitution
If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by Human Resources for comparability.       
 
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university
  • Clinical Simulation Teaching experience
  • Nursing Education experience
