What are the responsibilities and job description for the Quantum Scientist position at Barrington James?
We are hiring a Quantum Algorithms Engineer to join a world-class quantum computing team pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with near-term quantum systems. In this role, you will develop and adapt quantum algorithms to solve real-world problems in collaboration with external users, research partners, and internal technical teams.
This role goes far beyond implementing pre-built tools, we're looking for someone who can contribute original thinking, deep technical insight, and a rigorous scientific approach to solving complex problems with quantum computing.
Key Responsibilities
This position has been highly popular, and is likely that it will close shortly. We recommend applying as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Key Responsibilities
- Design and prototype quantum algorithms tailored to real-world industrial and scientific use-cases (e.g. QML, combinatorial optimisation, quantum chemistry)
- Engage directly with end users, researchers, and technical teams to co-develop problem definitions and algorithmic approaches
- Translate abstract quantum problems into implementable solutions including hybrid models, variational algorithms, or problem-specific ansätze
- Build demonstrations and proof-of-concept solutions on hardware or simulators, working across the full quantum stack
- Contribute to internal knowledge development and play a role in shaping algorithmic strategy
- PhD in physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related discipline
- Original research or engineering experience in quantum algorithms, particularly beyond textbook or tutorial-level work
- Deep understanding of quantum algorithmic frameworks (e.g., QAOA, VQE, HHL, tensor network methods, quantum-inspired heuristics)
- Strong Python skills with the ability to prototype and iterate rapidly, comfort building beyond standard SDK abstractions
- Ability to communicate complex technical material clearly, especially in collaborative and cross-disciplinary settings
- Domain expertise in areas such as operations research, quantum machine learning, finance, chemistry, or drug discovery
- Experience in benchmarking quantum and classical approaches
- Contributions to academic research or open-source tools at the algorithm or architecture level
- Understanding of near-term hardware limitations and experience adapting algorithms accordingly
- The opportunity to work at the forefront of quantum computing applications with real-world impact
- A collaborative research and engineering environment with access to cutting-edge platforms
- Hybrid work structure based in Japan, relocation support provided
- Competitive compensation, benefits, and long-term growth opportunities
