What are the responsibilities and job description for the AmeriCorps Public Health Outreach Member position at Barren River District Health Department?
Through partnership with Serve KY, the Kentucky Health Departments Association has been granted funding through the Federal AmeriCorps Agency to place AmeriCorps members in local health departments across the State of Kentucky. Members have a goal of increasing healthy outcomes of local communities and the program will also increase workforce in the public health field. AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to be trained and certified as Community Health Workers while serving in the four core programs identified under Public Health Transformation: WIC, HANDS, Harm Reduction and Health Education and Outreach.
The Barren River District Health Department is searching for determined, ambitious individuals with a passion for public health. The BRDHD is currently accepting applicants for the AmeriCorps Kentucky Public Health program in an effort to increase participation in our core public health programs, focusing on Outreach. Members will receive a Living Allowance of $10,200 (pre-tax) in installments during the term and an Education Award of $3,697.50 at the successful completion of the term. This position will need to serve 900 hours between Sept 1, 2026 - July 31, 2027.

The ideal Kentucky Public Health AmeriCorps member will have the following:
- A willingness to be a creative partner in their Local Health Department placement in order to find new ways to increase participation in HANDS, WIC, and Harm Reduction programs
- A positive and encouraging attitude
- A willingness to learn and implement best practices in the Local Health Department Placement
Eligibility Requirements: to be placed in service with Kentucky Public Health AmeriCorps, members must: be 18 or over, must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien, and pass all required state and federal background checks.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United State
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Consent to and pass mandatory AmeriCorps background checks, including National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC), NSOPW
- Must have a high school diploma, GED, or be working toward a diploma at the time of service
- Provide verification documents such as Driver’s License, and Social Security Card
- Must have transportation to and from serve-site
