Job Title: Temp HS School Counselor

Location: Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports To: School Administration (Principal or Designee)

This is a temporary counseling position supporting 9th and 11th grade students from October 1 through December 31. (Intent Not to Rehire) INR

Please note that the position will follow our school calendar, including the following school breaks:

  • Fall Break: October 12–16
  • Thanksgiving Break: November 23–27
  • Winter Break: December 21–31

Banning Lewis Prep Academy, serving grades 6–12, is one of two campuses (Banning Lewis Ranch Academy—K–5 is the other), is a tuition-free public charter school authorized by District 49, proudly serving the Banning Lewis Ranch community and surrounding neighborhoods in northeastern Colorado Springs. Position Overview

The Secondary School Counselor provides comprehensive school counseling services aligned with the ASCA National Model, supporting students’ academic, career, and social-emotional development.

This role delivers proactive programming, responsive services, and system-level supports to ensure all students are prepared for post-secondary success while fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.

Key Responsibilities

ASCA-Aligned Program Delivery (Academic, Career, Social-Emotional Development)

  • Implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors
  • Deliver classroom guidance lessons focused on academic success, SEL, and career readiness
  • Support student goal setting and academic planning aligned with graduation requirements
  • Promote college, career, and military readiness pathways

Individual and Group Counseling (Responsive Services)

  • Provide short-term individual counseling for academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs
  • Facilitate small group counseling sessions based on student needs (e.g., anxiety, organization, peer relationships)
  • Respond to student crises using appropriate intervention and referral processes
  • Collaborate with mental health and community resources when needed

Academic Planning & Postsecondary Readiness

  • Support course selection and academic scheduling for grades 6–12
  • Monitor student credit attainment and graduation progress
  • Guide students in post-secondary planning including college applications, career exploration, and workforce readiness
  • Support standardized testing coordination (PSAT, SAT, and other assessments as applicable)

Systems Support & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and intervention teams to support student success
  • Participate in MTSS and student support team meetings
  • Support implementation of PBIS and school-wide initiatives
  • Provide consultation to staff on student academic and social-emotional needs

Data, Assessment & Program Evaluation

  • Collect and analyze student data to identify trends and needs
  • Use data to design targeted counseling interventions and programming
  • Evaluate effectiveness of counseling services aligned to ASCA program goals
  • Maintain accurate records of services provided

Equity, Access & School Climate Leadership

  • Advocate for equitable access to academic and behavioral supports for all students
  • Promote a positive, inclusive school climate aligned with district and school values
  • Support attendance, engagement, and re-engagement initiatives for at-risk students

The School Counselor promotes a comprehensive, equity-driven counseling program that supports the whole child. This role is essential in fostering student resilience, belonging, academic achievement, and post-secondary readiness through proactive systems and responsive services aligned with ASCA standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or a closely related field.
  • Valid Colorado School Counselor license or eligibility to obtain licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in secondary school counseling (grades 6–12).
  • Knowledge and application of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model.
  • Experience supporting college and career readiness programming.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success
  • Expertise in academic advising and post-secondary planning
  • Strong crisis intervention and short-term counseling skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, families, and staff
  • Ability to use data to inform decision-making and evaluate programs
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards in all interactions

Work Environment & Physical Demands

School-based environment with frequent student meetings, small group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, and collaboration with staff and families. Requires regular sitting, standing, walking across campus, and occasional crisis response situations.

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive compensation package, which includes group insurance (health, dental, and vision), paid sick leave and personal leave, and participation in the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA) as our retirement plan.

Compensation: Approximate annual salary of $65,000

Pay: $31.25 per hour
